I'm new to the forum, but have a question for the pros. I just received this Jefferson Keelboat graded PR70DCAM, but it has a noticable spot just below the "U" in United. I have the opportunity to return it, and figured this might be one of the best times to buy the coin and not the holder. I'm not sure if this is a water droplet before incapsulation or what, but it's definitely on the coin, not the holder. Suggestions?http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=1978&lot=1255

If your coin has an obvious spot, it obviously is no longer Pr70.
Perhaps the spot was a microscopic speck when encapsulated.
In any case, if you can return it you would be wise to do so. Then you can buy a handful of keelboats without the spots!

    Welcome! :)

Sorry you had to find out the hard way about third party grading, but sometimes a lesson learned, is worth paying for.

Super nice examples of that coin can be had for a couple of bucks.

Try not to dwell on your mistakes. It's much better to chalk it up to experience, and move on.

If the spot bothers you then by all means send it back. It will bother you more in the future whether it gets worse or not.

Agreed - return it. Or submit it for the grade guarantee.

    Hello Redflyer,

IMO, I would send it back. It's no longer a Proof 70 and the spot makes it a damaged coin. There are a lot of these around so there not really rare.

It does look like a rinse spot. Return the coin. Having it regraded is an option of course, but when and if you ever decide to sell this coin, the spot will hurt the value regardless of what grade it receives.

Given that a 69 -- which can be nicer than this coin, or at least with far less obvious flaws -- can be had for dirt compared to this coin, yes, I'd send it back too.

But I'd also note that this spot was plainly visible on the original picture. Kinda hard for it to be a 70 when that's there. And as I don't see a shadow anywhere, it's pretty obviously on the coin, not the holder.

Thanks alot everyone. I just needed to confirm what I was already thinking. I sent it back today, and next time will scrutinize the photo a little bit more. When I order a PR70 coin, I expect the best and this one just didn't work. I had no idea that something like this would turn up on a TPG slab, but I guess anythings possible. I'm glad I found a place where there are so many knowledgable coin buffs. Thanks again.
