Hello! I've come for advice on my American coins. I'm fairly new to coins and I'm beginning to get a picture of the coin world and inevitably the fake or real problem is kicking in. So this particular one is a batch of what seem like good American coins the best possibly being these 5 cent buffalo's... That is if they are real! Hopefully that's good enough to see... So three are with D mint marks so are better as such. Weights are 4.935 up to 5.036 I assume this is within the limits? They have the correct dimeter and thickness is close 1.80mm - 1.90mm though I'm not which parts are best to measure maybe edges again is this an ok tolerance? And there's definitely nickel present though not sure if that test was necessary . So I'm now thinking are they real. Any input would be great thanks! One more photo :
Although there are fakes of just about everything, I think you're ok with these. But I'll also let the Buffalo guys give their opinions.
The 1919-D is the nicer of the bunch at a strong VF, possibly XF on a good day. I do see a spot of green pvc-like stuff on the reverse that I would attempt to treat with some acetone. After a while, this substance can eat into the coin like corrosion. Such a nice coin not to go the extra mile.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Yes, these are a nice grouping with original patina.......except, of course, the 1919-D with the spot of PVC contamination. Chris
Great that's made my day . I think the 1920-D one has the least wear over all but yes that's another subject I'm not great at yet... Grading :s . But I'm getting there... Got some other good coins in this batch but I think these were the best. Thanks!
Yes the copper sulphate corrosion is it? I've not seen a good way to treat that but I have acetone so maybe that will work thx. Ah PVC I see now ok that's helped me thanks!
Nice little herd you have there, better dates also a short soak in acetone pat dry with a micro fiber cloth. Repeat if nessary. Nice coins. Welcome aboard
Great thanks all yes this forum looks great as well I like the way it's made and lots of people around ...
Welcome to CT As a long time Buffalo collector they all look genuine & fine looking examples of their dates. Check out PCGS PhotoGrade https://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Buffalo/Grades
Thanks! Yes so this is where I start to get a bit muddled . I look at those pictures and I think wow maybe one of mine can go to ms60 but then I'm thinking no maybe XF / VF the worn parts look so much more clearer on mine with the patina so it's tricky. Is it worth grading / slabbing them? I have no idea what that costs or if it's worth it or who's best? And if they need to be professionally cleaned before grading etc. ? Here's a both sides example: (sorry the first ones a bit blurry but from face on it's harder to see the worn parts... Then see below where I put it at an angle to highlight wear): Anyway I'm mainly just learning about the coin world I guess... Any info would be great thanks!
Ah yes MS mint state whoops :s ! I suppose I meant AU but then again possibly it is too high I think (not used to that grading system yet). Anyway thanks.
Just got buffalo that the date is worn off other than that it would grade as G4-G8 more than likely. Is it still collectible??
Thanks for link. I got buffalo that would grade strong G4 maybe G8 but date is worn. My understanding is that this was a problem with the Buffalo and the reason they switched to Jefferson?? Is there any value????
Well my book says $1.50 up to $2200 depending on date... You need to check for mint marks and any mistakes as such which might narrow it down then maybe eBay it... I'm not sure it will get much though...
