Anyone care to weigh in on this one? Not supposed to exist is my impression. Since it apparently does, why don't others?

Honestly, it looks like someone took an 1875 and altered the date.

If it was 1875 they woulda had to alter a LOT more than the date. But I see what you're saying.

Anyone care to comment on how close the lettering is to the rim on the right side of the obv?

I see what you're saying (didn't really look at my Krause to see that the design changed from 1875 to 1877.) However, now I'd like to adjust my statement to say that it looks like someone took an 1878 and altered the date. Ha ha...

FWIW: it looks like an altered date to me as well. Look for tooling marks and metal movement under higher mag. If you see scratches and marks around the last digit, then it's probably altered

I’d also like to mention that if it is genuine, and unique, I’ll happily listen to the story around it and soak up any information that comes out.

Picked up off ebay for $60, out of curiosity mostly. Have to see it in hand. 30 day return policy. I have high power mags and cameras and I'll show you if I remember to.

Didn't see this thread before, but I'll go one step further and say that it's entirely fake, not an altered date. The weak/missing details, shallow depth of relief features, legends way too close to the dentils in some areas, and cut off bottom of the 1 in the date are all signs of a transfer die.
