Awesome toning. Even with the surface issues, I'd take it over a bland MS65.

Beautiful Walker...yes...nice toning+++. Overpriced (imho) for a common date and with nearly 48M minted there will be more.

Here's the coin. It was just a 1942 Mercury Dime in NGC MS-66. What had my attention was what was going on on the reverse at the N in ONE. It ended up selling for $28.00.

You only "overpaid" by certain definitions of the term. This issue increases by a full order of magnitude into the next grade...

This coin, with this color, in this holder, does not and should not be evaluated by "traditional" rules. Sometimes you have no choice but to make the market, because the coin itself makes the market.

I don't imagine that I will ever change my mind about the Walking Liberty being the most beautiful American coin ever made. It's in a class all by itself!

To the OP, if that’s the sort of coin that you find interesting, you’re already well on your way to owning great coins. At every grade there are coins I’d pay well above book price to acquire and coins I wouldn’t care to own at any price.

The trick is to know the difference. It’s much harder without seeing them in person. When you know it’s “the one” don’t be afraid to stretch a bit.

    My lesson.....

Saw a gorgeous 1927-S Peace dollar in a dealer’s case in a PCGS MS65 holder. Was maybe $9k at the time, way above “book” for the time. Loved it, and had the $ to buy at the time but didn’t. The dealer later got a CAC sticker on it. The price then went to $10.5k. Not able to stop thinking about it, I bought it, even though it took a few months to pay for. A few years later when I sold the set, it upgraded to PCGS MS65+ CAC, making it something like a $18k pop 5 coin. The numbers might not be exact, but they’re close. The whole experience made me TRVST my eyes a little bit more.

Stunner of a coin and all, but this wasn’t a loss. A common date at the grade, never overbid, more to come. The smart collectors know when the buy is better than the coin.

Both your hesitation and reluctance are quite understandable and possibly even commendable. After all, "Trust nothing you hear and only half of what you see." :watching:

In ICG VF20 BN (Looks nicer to me)
    1888/7 1C S2 VF20 BN Price Guide is $400.
Eventually sold for $16.50 ($21.50 with BP), I almost got it for $15.50 but was outbid last second.
