What do you guys think about this shield nickel. the way the planchet is seperated it almost makes me think someone was trying to make their own 1867 w/rays nickel. I've never seen a coin do that on it's own before, especially one thats not a copper nickel sandwich.
Interesting, I don't think it is a lamination. But, interesting. however, it does appear to have been buried, so, ?, was that the cause? Or could the corosion (sp) be hiding something?
GDJMSP I am not sure, it is just that my gut is saying that there is something funny with the piece. But, I have been wrong before.
One thing I notice is that the reverse has more pitting than the obverse. and the fact that the 1867 with rays is worth more than the 66. I can see someone trying to put two halves together. The obverse of the cheaper 1867 to the with rays revers from 1866.
