On the new Pres $1 coins some rims are right side up and some are upside down. Is there more of one type than another or is this purely random?

On the roll of George Washingtons that I got, maybe about half were upside down. Supposedly there is no increased value and it is as common as the regular ones.

The number of right-side up versus upside down is 50/50. The edge-lettering process is purely random.

it cannot be 50/50 its a s good a s saying that if you toss a coin 100 times you will get 50 heads and 50 tails as a result. but i do agree the process is random :)

It's random, but I have a different question. Will collector's books have spots to put both die orientations, making every year have four varieties (P up, P down, D up, D down)?

Statistically, the process is always 50/50. Obviously, if you counted up all the Washington dollars (since their run is over), one will have a slight lead over the other, but it'll be pretty dang close to 50/50. Then there's the issue of "edge-less" dollars...

I was wondering the same thing BigH. It would be nice wouldnt it?
That would make the complete set 160 coins. Although, I suppose we could just start a book for each type. If we live that long!
Personally I am puting away unopened and uncirculated rolls. I try to get them first day of issue but that is not always possible.

Does the mint even know how many were minted in each direction?
I havent seen any mintage release numbers yet either.

Personally I dont like it there. It is hard to see and I like to show off the mint marks.
