NGC changes mind on strike-on-the-day 200th anniversary plain-edge sovereigns; they're now business

Short background: The Royal Mint accidently sent some of these coins to customers with COAs that erroneously stated they were proofs. They quickly discovered the error and sent correct COAs and a letter of explanation. Problem is NGC acted on the early, erroneous COAs and designated the coins as proofs (PF) on slab labels. When the error was pointed-out to them, they initially refused to budge.

Link is my report on the problem: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ng...00th-anniversary-sovereigns-as-proofs.302578/ This link contains a link to the NGC forum and NGC's response to the problem.

Apparently enough folks have complained, and now the coins are being designated as MS on the label. Most are getting MS70. Not sure what they are going to do about coins that have the PF label. Folks that have them may want to hold on to them in their present slabs because the slabs with the PF label will become rarer than ones with the MS label.

They'll probably end up killing the certs for the proof labeled ones to encourage a relabeling that hopefully (should) be free

Then again, the insert may just be considered a mechanical error.......which is worthless.

Probably reslabbing with a new label will be free. Doubt they'll pay for postage in either direction.

They should cover the postage in my opinion as it was their mistake but you're probably right

Apropos of absolutely nothing, but we just had an ear-splitting lightning strike peel the bark off a very large tree roughly ten yards away from our backyard patio, and since I just that instant happened to be looking out through the picture window at the relentlessly driving rain I had the pleasure(?) of seeing this eminently explosive event occur right before my instantly bug-eyed self. All I can say is if I'd had gold and silver tidbits for lunch I would be pooping some fairly awesome "first strike" coins right about now...and I might feel obliged to post them on the forum!

Thats cool/interesting to consider if having one would add value. Supposed to be about the coins but us collectors are always nuts anyway right?

Has anyone ever documented what coins look like after lightning strikes them?

Considering the overwhelming size, enormous flash, giant sparks and monstrous BOOM of the strike I just witnessed all too up-close and personal, I would theorize that any coin on earth hit point blank by the lethal tip of a lightning spear would likely be melted down to an unidentifiable slug. :dead:

NGC will not cover shipping or insurance either way. At least that has been my experience. I had two coins where they admit, in an email, that they screwed up and there was missing information on the label. They said all labels going forward would have the information included. Well, I wanted the correct labels on my coins. They tried to charge me a re-slabbing fee, but I complained enough, showing the email as proof they admit to making a mistake. They finally agreed to re-slab for free, but I would have to pay for shipping and insurance both ways.
