I picked this coin up at an antique shop today for $15 and took a chance. It was in a bag with no ID on it. Its silver and my guess would be gaul but I really don't know. Has a horseman on one side and not sure what the depiction is on the other. Any help with an ID? And any rough estimate on value? Thanks!
Just throwing out a very wild guess. Ukraine, eastern Europe or somewhere nearby. Lettering looks like something 13th-15th century. Horseman is reminiscent of early Russian. I don't think it's from Gaul. It doesn't look like anything in Roberts book. That may give you someplace to search
Could the coin be a form of Drachma? I found some similar legends on some Germanic coins but no positive matches. how big is the coin? weight? The legends I have linked are ancient Greek.
So I will guess early Russian "wire money" http://www.metaldetectingworld.com/hammered_wire_silver_coins.shtml I think oldhoopster was on the right track.
It's from the Duchy of (Upper) Lorraine/Lotharingia, maybe 13th century(?), issued in the capital of Nancy. The reverse shows a hand holding a sword (which is what tipped me off). Neat coin! https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1017223
It's an antecedent of this later cool & somewhat bizarre type showing an "armored arm, wielding sword, emerging from clouds."
