I picked this coin up at an antique shop today for $15 and took a chance. It was in a bag with no ID on it. Its silver and my guess would be gaul but I really don't know. Has a horseman on one side and not sure what the depiction is on the other. Any help with an ID? And any rough estimate on value? Thanks!

Just throwing out a very wild guess. Ukraine, eastern Europe or somewhere nearby. Lettering looks like something 13th-15th century. Horseman is reminiscent of early Russian. I don't think it's from Gaul. It doesn't look like anything in Roberts book. That may give you someplace to search

Thanks for the tip, I'll try to search around. If I get lucky, maybe someone else here might know.

Could the coin be a form of Drachma? I found some similar legends on some Germanic coins but no positive matches.
how big is the coin? weight?
The legends I have linked are ancient Greek.

It's very thin and is a little smaller than the size of a dime. Weighs about .59 grams.

these two legends appear to be quite similar to those in your image.

IMHO not gaulish at all. Looks central/east slavic-germanic/medieval.

  12. Severus Alexander

Severus Alexander find me at NumisForums

It's from the Duchy of (Upper) Lorraine/Lotharingia, maybe 13th century(?), issued in the capital of Nancy. The reverse shows a hand holding a sword (which is what tipped me off). Neat coin!
