Definitely a proof. Based on recent ebay sales, the proof and UNC go for about the same amount ($30-$40 on average, with some selling for more). The proof tough has a much lower mintage at 11,000 vs 950,000 for the BU http://donbailey-mexico.com/libertad_mintages.shtml
Coin is definitely a proof. I've seen some proof like Libertad's before, but I've never seen them with the level of frost/cameo that is apparent on your coin.
Wow, after all the nice things people said, I hate to reveal that it is a fake. It had me fooled until I got it home and it jumped to a magnet. I then weighed it and it is only 27 or so grams. Darn good fake.
Sorry I have been watching football, so missed out to say they have hit the swap meet hard. They seem to be silver plated, but there will be more. under $3 each https://www.aliexpress.com/item/200...can-Clad-Silver-Bullion-coin/32224902415.html
Looking closely at the details (like the mountains), one can see some clear differences. Still this is an example where most (including me) would not have noticed anything wrong upon a quick look. It definitely pays to take a closer look and do some basic testing (like putting the coin on a scale). Good work @Kentucky in discovering this one!
Agreed really taking a close look at it, the head seems shrunken and the face is off. It's too bad there's so many fakes floating around these days or unscrupulous sellers who buy off Ali, etc and attempt to profit off deception.
Lesson well learned as Kentucky mentioned it's a fake! All we do now is move forward and now that we're aware of the mucho fake Mexican coins, we can all be more observant! Better luck next time Kentucky!
Yeah, it was at a swap meet and the dealer sold it to me at melt. After I got home and it clicked to a magnet I gave him a call and he said he would refund the money when I saw him again at the market. He also sold me a war nickel set and a bag of foreign coins I will put in another post. I think it was just an error, I just wanted people here (who I have great respect for) to see how darn good these fakes are. Remember...always carry your magnet!!!
It's true, not always, and very often the dealers don't even know. I went to an antique mall, while the dealer was therre. Did my usual and took out coins and had them hold them that catch my eye, even if I dont inspect them at high detail. The dealer saw me get them and started talking to the dealer. I found some other things and later I noticed all the hairlines. The dealer had already left, then I was telling them I saw hairlines and they said this is what the dealer told them "Whoever picked those out that fast knows a thing or two about coins," then continued on to explain the exact details of how he cleaned them, and didn't even tell me. By the was the coins were both actually uncirculated details indian head cent and 1883 no cents. Both under $20 (IHC was $18 and V nickel was $11). Even though great deals I didn't like the deceptiveness of the dealer. I ended up not to get them.
A story told here was one of our members was buying Morgans at a Gun Show and picked out half a dozen and had the dealer to hold them for him. When he returned, the Morgans gleamed like the sun because the dealer had cleaned them for him using an eraser he "knew" couldn't hurt them.
