I like to sort my coins into date rolls. IE all the same mintmark and date. I do this probably because I am anal retentive. But I think it is fun Are date rolls actualy worth more?
I suppose it would depend on the date. If you were selling them, you'd probably get more for a mixed roll of wheat cents rather than a roll of 1958 wheats all together. Some times they're worth more, though. Like S-mint coins for instance. They will usually sell for a premium if rolled up together, since they're scarcer than P and D.
Just assorted coinage though. All types. No just pennies. I am particulary fond of the Kennedy Halves
I do this for years of Lincolns with known errors / varietys to make close-up detail checking that much faster. I would rather go thru a roll looking only for doubled ears or wide AM rather than looking at the book every other coin. My wife seperates them into 5 year piles, then we put them in seperate year tubes until a tube fills up, then go check them closer when i have time. Helps us at least ( and is helping the wife get into coins ). She is going to her first coin show with me this weekend and will be searching " world " bins for coins with nature on them, animals, birds, trees, etc.
well Eyesee ... i am as anal retentive as you are. I got coin boxes filled with tubes from 1800 something to the present. Not so much on the last 5 or 10 years, but certainly every date, mintamrk and variety before that! I dont knmow why i do it... possibly just for the order, it looks neater then slopped in bags all mixed together. I also do it so i know what i have. I know i dont have any of this date or that date, but i know i have several rolls of another date. anal retentive? Nah!!! just a personalized view and treacherous perceptive way of dealing with the coin collection addiction
Goods and bad for everything. If you use plastic rolls, I assume you do, it could become expensive. If you do not and use paper rolls, eventually those coins will or may be all messed up. As to putting them in rolls by dates/mint marks, very good for knowing what you have. For sales I find at coin shows the vast amount of purchasers only want one coin, not a roll. Of course there are those that do buy rolls if a certain type, date, mint. For future sales, not a good idea. For inventory purposes, great.
