I told myself, "it's my Christmas present to me." I tell myself a lot of things like that. Fortunately I share the same taste as me and myself, so there have been no arguments about over indulging. Tiberius AV Aureus. Lugdunum, AD 14-37. TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head right / PONTIF MAXIM, Livia as Pax seated right on chair with ornamented legs above a single exergual line, holding long vertical sceptre in right hand and branch in left. RIC 29; C.15; Calicó 305b; BMC 46; BN 26. 7.64g, 18mm, 10h. I have looked at these...... for a very long time. Now I will be paying for one of these......... for a very long time.
Your specimen was probably a subliminal influence in my purchase. I have looked at your collection so many times, it wasn't until this morning that I remembered you own a superb example. Your Tribute Penny write-up was running in my mind when I was deciding on my bid price. I just didn't realize it was from your website, til 30 seconds ago. I blame this purchase on you. Thanks everyone else. Kind comments. btw I am interested to see it in hand. It was described as having luster around the devices.
Particularly nice portrait on this one. So many are truly schematic, even on the gold; this one has a nice sense of individuality to it. Congratulations!
Well done @4to2centBC ! Beautiful Aureus! Such a wonderful feeling to hold approx 1/4TOZ of ancient gold in your hand... I have a couple Ancients around that weight, and they are fun to hold. Same with Modern World Gold, I like that 1/4TOZ weight the best! Well done!
I just searched "Tiberius aureus" on acsearch and many examples come up, but yours has unusually fine portrait style. You have good taste.
