I spotted this one and thought it worth picking it up. Constantine the Great - Follis Obv:– IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, Laureate, cuirassed bust right Rev:– SOLI INVICTO COMITI, Sol standing left, holding right hand high in salute and globe Minted in Rome (R | F / R * S). A.D. 314 Reference(s) – RIC VII Rome 20 var (Unlisted officina. Listed for P-R4, T-R5 and Q-R5 so not unexpected) 4.15 gms. 20.94 mm. 180 degrees Martin
I LOVE the look of it....one I'd happily add to my collection!! The closest I have is this follis with the bust of Sol. AE Follis of Constantine I; Trier, 4.54 grams, 23 mm: circa 310- 313 AD Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG Radiate and draped bust of Sol right SOL INVICTO COMITI (Claiming the Unconquered Sun as a companion to the Emperor) RIC 890 (no mintmark)
I have shown it before, but my sol invictus must be the same type: It is labelled as "RIC 40-4" - Not sure if this is correct.
Your coin is indeed RIC 40 (4th workshop) and differs from Martin's coin in several ways- the mintmark, bust type and field marks.
Very nice coin, Martin! I have a Licinius with a similar reverse type. I think Sol has a cute face on this one: 314 A.D., Rome Mint, 4th Officina 3.20g, 21.0mm, 6H Obverse: IMP LICINIVS P F AVG, Bust of Licinius, laureate, draped, cuirassed, right Reverse: SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI, Sol, radiate, chlamys draped across left shoulder, standing left, raising right hand and holding globe in left hand Exergue: R/F//R*Q Reference: RIC VII Rome 22
Nice find from the secondary officina Martin. I have a similar reverse example. Constantine I AE Follis. Obv: IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: SOLI INV-I-CT COM DN, Sol standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, holding globe, right hand raised. Mintmark: RS. Charlie
