    1. Would you buy Pres. dollar rolls direct from the mint @ a little over $1.43 per coin?
    2. Is having the P & D coins wrapped separately in the mint wrappers worth the extra money?
    3. Would you keep the coins in the mint wrappers?
    4. Would you pickup the dollar coins from the bank or locally and hope to get a good split on the P's & D"s?
    5. Or would you not buy or pickup the rolled presidential dollars at all?

I'd buy several rolls from the bank, at face value.
Search through them and keep the best ones.
Continue doing this until you get the amount of each that you want.
I see no premium for the original rolls.
The rolling is contracted through N.F. String & Son in Harrisburg, PA anyway.

They make the wrappers, but they aren't the folks who put the coins in them. I wrap coins in String wrappers myself.

Sounds good, but it's just not how it works. My Citibank here in downtown Downers Grove has both rolls of Unc. Jefferson P or D mint dollars. They have with all 3 dollars so far. I will admit that it is unusual for a bank to have a supply like this, but it not only is it possible, but it DOES actually happen. Well at least in 1 place.

    1. No, I wouldn't
    2. No, you can collect P&D rolls for less. Some will always pay more for percieved value. Who know if the mint label will bring more than the Strings label. Personally, I buy coinss not wrappers. They are the same coins. The mint wrapped ones did not receive any special treatment when they went through the hopper.
    3. Yes, if I spent $1.43 for the same coins that I could get at the bank for $1.00. You bet I would keep them wrapped. That extra $.43 per coin is for THE WRAPPER.
    4. I get my rolls from the bank. There is no hope involved. If you live east of the Mississippi, you get P rolls. West of the Mississippi, you get D rolls. Some places in the midwest along the Mississippi, you might get both. Trouble is, the rolls don't indicate mint mark so that requires faith to be sure you get both mints. To solve this, you can either buy a wrapped roll of the mint you need at a show for a slight premium or find a trading buddy here on cointalk and mail each other rolls for mere postage.
    5. I'm putting back a couple rolls of each mint mark per issue. Not for any false dreams of increased value but I hope to share them with the grandkids and maybe fill a couple albums in 8-9 years to sell on ebay.

I can see that in Chicago near the middle between Philly and Denver. Banks order from there fed reserve who order from the mints.

    SMOOTH EDGE or DOUBLE STRUCK

Which will have the most appreciation in the next two years? My guess is if the Mint does do away with the edge incsription the Washington and Adams smooth edges will take off because all future presidential dollars would now be smooth and here you would have a limited amount of Adams and Washington smooth edges out there to complement the collection of presidential dollars with all smooth edges. Let's say it is next year and James Monroe is the 5th coin in the series to be released and the edge inscription has been eliminated so now you have one hundred million James Monroe presidential smooth dollars. In addition, each each future presidential coin produced will also be a smooth edge, so now if you want a complete collection of smooth edge presidential dollars you have to hope someone will sell you the 1 of 5000 Adams smooh edges estimated to be out there or the 1 in 150,000 Washington smooth edges estimated to be out there and as for Jefferson or Madison no one really knows yet what will happen with those. If the edge inscription does stay then I believe the double struck will do the best because the liklihood of another double struck batch ever happening again will be much more unlikely than a smooth edge batch. I think smooth edges will continue to occur on a small scale for all future presidents, but the only double struck we will ever see is with the Adams and two years from now if we have 10 presidents that have all had smooth edges found and the only occurence of any double struck was with the Adam then I bet these coins fly in price.

We will have the lettered edge on the dollars until at least 2009, and there are also "double struck edge" Washington dollars as well. They are just less common than the Adams coins.

Better yet Elaine, look at the government wrapped 2000 Sac dollars. Ever see anyone pay a premium for them?
