Amuse me. What could this dime be worth if it checks out to be what it appears to be?

Honestly, it just looks like a normal 1942 dime. this is what it needs to look like for an overdate. Yours doesn't look anything like them.

As to a ghost/inverted/filled mm? Your pics aren't detailed enough to show anything. It could very easily (and a lot more likely, that what you're seeing is due to marks and scuffs or even something from the toning.

I'm sorry, but all I see is a nice looking 1942 Mercury Dime

I wouldn't make this up for amusement. I have better things to do. I expect both positive and negative feedback.

I get the feeling you would be wise to familiarize yourself with the concept of pareidolia, sir.

    Not real sharp, are you?

It wasn't an insult, hotshot, but is a simple reality that is part of the human experience. Need proof? Take a look at a Connecticut state quarter; that's PAREIDOLIA. Jesus, Mohammad, or Jerry Garcia hanging out on the morning toast or up in the clouds? PAREIDOLIA.

Nearly every day someone posts to this forum thinking they're seeing some impossible, even magically anomaly that is most often explained by, you guessed it: pareidolia, but why even consider a likely explanation for what you're seeing when it's simply not what you want to hear? 9/11.... oy.

Noted. I am not very tech savy. How do i upload picture from my driod? I can't figure that part out. They are their my friend. I understand your scepticism i do because for the life of me i cant find anything close to it online. I dont get kicks out of making things up. That i'll assure you.

No it is clearly not a 42/1 which is plainly seen with the naked eye. As shown in the photos above. Also the 42/1 is not an S.
While the photo is not crisp, I can see a large S but IDK if that is from an S that used to be there, or just my imagination.
Without good photos or viewing it in hand, there's no way to make any kind of judgment or valuation.
As for the DDO, while I can see some doubling, I can't tell from the photos if it is a doubled die, die deterioration or mechanical doubling.
If it is a doubled die and the S has been removed (I believe there is a DD variety for the 1942 and the 1942-S) that would hurt the value in my opinion.
Try a digital camera and not a phone. Best of luck.
You can always take it to an "expert" and see what they say. It's better to examine a coin in hand, thru a magnifying loupe than to look at a photo.

I don't doubt your sincerity at all, and was part of the point I was attempting to make had things not taken an unnecessary turn. The fact is, though, that what people often think they see isn't what's actually there. I can't even begin to tell you how many times, even if only on this forum, someone will post a coin claiming to see some anomaly that cannot (or should not) exist. Even though I often can see exactly what they're talking about, the anomaly can be explained as being something other than what they believe. It's just something you really should consider the possibility of.

That said, if memory serves me, you should be able to post straight from your phone. Click the "upload a file" button below where you write your posts, and when the options open, go into your "gallery" (or whatever Android calls it) and choose the photo/photos you wish to post.

Are you gettin some sort of error message, perchance? I ask only because I have on a few occasions since switching to Apple, but when still using Androids, I don't recall any problems.

As you can see I looking for answers to a logical question. For what it worth i had to save the images to my drive before i could upload them. Sorry for the earlier pics that couldn't be cropped.

For crimony sakes take the 6 screws loose, the plastic is going to keep giving terrible photos and false hope. none of your photos will ever be clear enough, with that much plastic in the way.
You don't even have to touch the coins.

    1) Not a DDO
    2) no mintmark, the scratches, if any could be from a) damage or b) polishing of the die at the mint.
    Either way, no biggie

I'm quoting this for agreement. Sometimes we (all of us, myself included) think too hard about things and this is such a time, I'm afraid.
