I just opened one of my mint sets and noticed a large hole in the cheek of the horse on the Wyoming Statehood quarter. The whole head of the horse looks much shinier that the rest of the reverse like it was stamped through grease and there is a large dent in the cheek of the horse. It's in the Philly set. Anybody else notice just how crappy the quality of these sets seems to be?
i havent recieved mine yet, but will certainly take a closer look when i do .. thx for th heads up... was that the only coin that looked like that?
I agree. I got mine and was pretty disappointed in the quality and what looked to be poor handling of the coins prior to placement in the sets. Lots of marks, rubs and other damage. I did however have one surprize with them though. This one was there. Looks to be doubling of the robe on the arm. 2b1ask1
No, I have a couple that look like this one. The Denver sets have a star burst pattern around George Washington's head on the Wyoming coin in every set. Different mint, same coin obverse. Odd sort of errors to happen on the same coin from different mints. I found a couple of coins that look like either the planchet had a half inch rounded deep scrape in it when it was struck or a piece of scrap got in the die and pressed itself into the design. All in all, they look pretty shabby.
agreed-- don't know if i've had bad luck this year, or if the mint is off its game, but i had to send two products back this year for a replacement. one silver proof set and one standard proof set, both with obvious damage to the fields of more than one coin in each. it's both disappointing and aggravating, especially since you have to pay to ship the coins back to the mint. they need to step up their quality control, or i may start cutting back on the number of items i purchase each year. v.
Just checked all three of my sets. No problems. One or two coins did have a few extra bag marks, but all-in-all they look okay.
My own quote, I took some ones advice and opened all five. They are all terrible! And after a second close look the first is not really good either. The Kennedy has a scratch. One Denver set actually has a black like spot, it's huge on the reverse over the Lincoln Memorial cent. It actually blots out the 'of' and the 'A' in America and down into the 'e pluribus unum' Not to be outdone there is one (although they are all bad) Sac that actually looks circulated, scratches dents, dings! When I first posted I didn't really believe they could be so bad. These are the worst graded coins ever produced by the mint. I actually may keep the black cent set, just to look at the bad quality over and over. It's a misery thing I really am kind of tolerant with the Mints products when I hear complaints, but I would never tell anyone not to buy something from them, but seeing five of these sets of mine. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THEM. You will be disappointed. Moen, I wish I was able to get a photo of this black blob thing on my cent, it is unreal!
2007 mint set do not buy. simple. the mint hired so many new unexperienced employees. because they got so many orders. and in order for them to fill up everyone who always need rush and immediately delivery. they simply did it faster and faster. in factory, we call it mass production. the so called satin finished, i think they just get them from uncirculated coins and chooce them there.
The machines do most of the work including the package. I wait a month or so, then order. It seem with the unc's they unload the bad ones first. Sometimes I will go to the Mint store and buy across the counter so I can cherry pick
Do you mean the Mint in Philly? Will they allow you to open the boxes? I've been down there many times and they just hand you the set in the box in years past. Let me know.
