I have three coins here that I need opinions on because I couldn't find any info on them.
The first is an 1848, variety (look at the 1)? what grade? 1st 2 pics
The second is an 1853 where there is no separation between the 5 and the curl, grade also? 2nd 2 pics
And the last is the reverse of an 1837, is this a wide AM or normal for this year? last pic
    Thanks for any info!

    Dave:
    1) the 1848: Looks like it is the B-1900 (for Breen from the Encyclopedia of US Coins)
He mentions the closed 4, and 'traces of repunching' on teh 184, 18, 84, 4. The 1 is obvious and I believe that I see it on the 8.
However, I am not a pro at grading these, they are a creature of their own.
    2) 1853: You have to check Newcomb for the variety, not listed in Breen, but it should have been.
    3) I am not positive, but I believe so.

    Good luck.

    Howdy,
I agree with Frank on the 1848. Sure does look like the RPD. And also as Frank, I'm not very good at grading LG Cents. You might want to ask Mark_h about that as he is the man to ask when it comes to LG Cents.

Thanks speedy - but we all know I have a lot to learn about large cents - grading and attributing. As for my grades I would say VF30 for the 1848 (I believe it is a N-2 - harshly cleaned) and F-12 for the 1853 (I think n-10 based off the position of the 1 on the dentical). I like the 1853 and the 1837 the best - as for the wide AM questions, I have no idea. My book did not mention anything on the 1837 about a wide AM - the only time I have heard wide AM used is in reference to Lincoln cents. Of course that does not mean anything. I use Heritage a lot to determine some of newcomb numbers and for comparison of coins. I recommend getting an account there, if for nothing else, to just look at the realized auctions.

Looks like a nice start to a large cent collection.

Thanks for the info mark, I have about 35 Large Cents with my pride and joy being an 1800/79 that I picked up on Ebay for $5. It's probably around a G-4 to VG-8. Not bad for $5. I have plenty of pics if you want to see or study them, although I'm sure you'v seen plenty. Thanks again.

I am sure all will tell you that I can never see enough large cents. Post away! $5 bucks for 1800/79 is a great deal.

Interesting reverse on that 1837. Someone has deliberately altered it to read ONE **** instead of ONE CENT. Looks like they did a fairly professional job too. I would love to see how ANACS would describe that coin.:D

Just a joke--ha ha, but seriously, I think that's what they'd call it. Joke again....maybe
