It just occured to me that there might be people out there on this forum that have actually FOUND real antique coins underwater or with metal detectors. Have any of you come accross treasure!? I know that one of my friends in the Bahamas was using a metal detector at the beach infront of her home and she actually came accross a chest that was burried a few feet under the ground and it was filled with coins, pearls and silverwear. How exciting is that!!! My other friend, who happens to be a dive instructor down there actually found an UNOPENED bottle of brandy that was about 500 years old close to a shipwreck also in the bahamas! Hah! I can't believe this wasn't my first post because I remember the days when I found out this stuff so well! So, are there any of you that have come accross such incredibly rare finds? I mean literally lol
Personally, no. But, I have bought several pieces of shipwreck treasure discovered by Mel Fisher. Not as fun as discovering it myself, but I have very little time to go diving on the East coast. Guy~
O wow! Thats really cool stuff! Owning things like that are one in a lifetime purchases in my opinion. I mean you really do OWN a piece of history which is pretty amazing with you think about it I can't wait to see what other people post on this thread! Coleguy do you have any pictures of your collection? I would Love to see them!
I used to have a pic in the Gallery section, which has gone missing for a while now. But, you can see a poor pic of it here: http://groups.msn.com/CoinNutsPlace...Message=8710&LastModified=4675599824589937945 One of these days I'll have to get some better pics up. Guy~
Yes, it was bought. It's from a Mel Fisher store, so it was overpriced compared to many others you can buy. But, not many others come from a shipwreck, so I thought it was neat. Guy~
Mel Fisher Want to know what's odd about Mel Fisher. The guy was born in the town I live in. The closest big body of water to me is Lake Midhigan. He started off diving in ponds and lakes in Northern Indiana. "Born in 1922 in Indiana, Mel read Treasure Island as a boy and thinks that may have been what gave him the treasure bug. An inventor even at an early age, he remembers making his first dive helmet out of a bucket, some hose line, and a bicycle pump." I omitted my town name but this can be looked up on line. What a place to start a world famous treasure hunting career. Indiana?!?
Yes I have found coins underwater, found an entire Spanish Galleon as a matter of fact. But you won't find my name listed in any book or on any web site. You could find my name on a plaque embedded in the piece of coral upon which sits the anchor of that galleon. It all happened 31 years ago this month in the Florida Keys.
We believed it was, never could prove it by the time I left though. I am pretty sure that someone found a provenance about 6 years later, 1982, but I can't swear to it. And no I never got rich as a result - I was just the mate. But it was one of the neatest things I have ever done in my whole life
Man, I'd love to go hunting for sea treasure in sunken ships. I hear it takes A REALLY long time to find a ship though. You have to know exactly what you'r doing and make sure you are scanning every single bit of the ocean. Otherwise, you could skip by one. And then when it comes to sunken treasure in crates that accidentally fell overboard (of course there are thousands out there still)...they may be near impossible to spot.
Me Toooooo yep! i'd love to go hunting for treasure too, that's why i wanna get a metal detector! might even discover something......
