I have had this 1818 half for a lot of years and just noticed this error on the edge lettering. Where it says 'OR HALF DOLLAR' the " h " in half is stamped over the "r" in or. Is this a common error in early halves??? Any early half specialists here today??
It's unusual, but not very rare. There were many errors with the edge lettering I understand. can you post a whole picture of the coin, both sides? Take Care Ben
The edge is applied to the planchet by forcing the blank to rotate between two edge dies, each of which contains half of the edge inscription. One die says FIFTY CENTS OR and the other says HALF A DOLLAR. If the dies are not returned to their proper starting place it is possible for the coin to rotate too far and part of the inscription of one die to be impressed over the impression of the other.
