Hey, I read and saw a bunch of posts with users on here getting rolls of half dollars from the bank of 90 % and 40 % silver .... i'm new to coins and confused as to this ... but i would like to be able to buy some 90% and 40% silver coins ...

can someone help me out with some useful information as what to buy and what to ask for and look for in that case?

    thanks

No, the banks are not THAT generous to provide you rolls of half dollars at face value. Instead, this is dependent on people who are unaware of the value of such coins and therefore get recycled back to collectors. Collectors must spend time and effort to look for it.

    what gx said.
You have to ask for rolls and go thru them.
A lot of work, that sometimes pays off.

all you have to do is go in a bank and ask for half dollars. they might have none, or they might have $500 worth. if they don't have any, ask to order a box. look for anything 1970 and older, 1987 P and D, and anything 2002 or newer. you might even get franklins, walkers, and barbers in these rolls. people do find that kind of stuff! well, good luck!:D

Yeah like it was said before, it depends on people who put these coins back into circulation. I actually like the idea of going to exchange bills for half dollar rolls. It doesn't cost you anything but time and can be somewhat profitable (and fun), but I wouldn't expect to find 10 out of a roll of 20 that are silver.

I almost always check my pocket change - now a silver coin stands out to me. I bought a cup of coffee @ Starbucks about a month ago and got a silver dime back in change. :high5: Great success!

    Best of luck to you.

I've been doing this for a few years, but only looked for 1969 and earlier .. what have I been missing on the 2002 and newers? Are those of value?? :headbang:

2001 was the last year of halves released for circulation. 2002+ halves were sold by the Mint in rolls and bags, but not circulated. Some around here seem to have great luck finding 2002+. 1970 and 1987 halves were also not released into circulation.

Also, before you get your hopes up for finding rolls upon rolls of silver halves, keep in mind that this happens very rarely. Oftentimes, the rolls at a bank have already been searched and returned (or sometimes, you'll get a bank-rolled box and it'll be filled with "new" 2001 halves), and you'll find absolutely nothing. However, don't be discouraged, just keep trying, and eventually you'll find some silver.

    Good luck!

also look for any half with a S mintmark. they are proofs, and someone broke into a collection and spent them becuase the mint did not issue them for circulation. good luck! :thumb:

Also, don't forget error coins. Varieties take much more time to find, but they are out there.

You will also get stuck with tokens, foreign coins, short rolls (and an occasional 21 coin roll), rolls with penny/nickel/dime/quarter/dollar substituted, and of course, the occasional guitar pick.
