I am becoming interested in tokens that were used by different stores / business's in MI, decades ago. Anyone have suggestions were such tokens would be catalogued, graded or priced? Thanks
"Michigan Merchant Money" by Paul A Cunningham -1977 There are several supplements to this book and I lack all except the first. It's quite good and probably represents the most complete collection in existence. Many tokens have been lost to time and tide in their entirety and it's not too unusual for new ones to surface as singles or even in quantities. I have no idea how to find a copy of this but would suggest joining TAMS and contacting the various dealers of these. Several come to mind and I believe Mr Cunningham is still active.
There are a few Token books on the market. A few good ones include : Standard catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1800 4th edition Tokens and medals Check out http://www.brooklyngallery.com/ click on the books section under tokens.
Thank You Gentlemen. What is TAMS? I know that acronymn as Techniques of Alcohol Management Systems and I am sure it is not that. I am guessing it is Tokens and Medals Society?
Hi, Speaking of tokens Did any of you ever hear of a store card from Shade Mills Maryland probably dated from 1856 to 1861 ? I'm currently researching that store and wondered if they issued stor cards. I own their day book ledger that dates from 1856 to 1861 (681 pages) The store owner was William Frost son of the founder of Frostburgh MD. Thanks, Greg
Digging deep through my referrence material, I find no mention of a William Frost or any token created in Shady Mills. Now, that does not mean that this merchant did not use one. It could have been created by some designer and issued through his particular store. There were many store cards and tokens issued throughout Maryland and quite a few designers also. I would suggest that you search through local records to find if any such tokens were used, and try to get an accurate description of said token. This way, you could track down the particular designer and the dates in which the tokens were issued. Good luck in your quest.
Wow! This is one old resuscitation. Try looking under "Virginia" here; http://www.tokencatalog.com/ A lot has changed in 13 years.
