I guess I bought this antoninianus of Gordian III because it was a reverse I lacked and reasonably priced but further examination turned up another feature that might qualify it for my oddity collection. To the left we see a bit of flowing drapery. I thought it a bit odd that the drapery flowed to the right as well but now it seems this is a rather large die cud. Even for a break, it seems oddly shaped. I wonder about the story behind it.
Dont know how it happened but as a Gordian III fan I definitely love your coin. I don't have that Gordian III reverse yet, but my favorite Imperial denarius also has that same theme (sort of).
Nice coin. I've got the MARTEM PROPVGNATOREM type on an antoninianus but I also understand that that legend was used on sestertii.
Interesting breaks, and a nice coin. I have a Mars reverse with a slightly different reverse legend, but the thing I like most about the coin is it's very dark toning.
