im asking for a metal detector for my b-day comeing up in about a month.

What is the best detector for a begginer who wants something simple, but doesnt want to have to buy another one for several years.

I think almost everyone recommends White's. I have a detector already, but this brand is probably what I'll buy whenever I decide to get a new one.

White sox? Who are they? You must be a Mayor Daley fan also.
As to a metal detector I would say to tell anyone buying it to just go to Walmart and get one there. Anyone will do for a starter. If you loose interest in using one, then not much is lost. Of course if your not buying it, then it all depends on how much you want someone to spend on you. Remember they sell lots and lots of them everywhere and most people end up leaving them on a shelf after a few trys.

    Ben's referral is excellent.
The 250 is probably the hottest machine currently out there, esp for the price.

I think most people give up 'cause they don't ever find anything with a cheap detector! Better to spend a little extra on a machine that will ACTUALLY detect good things in the ground. If you find you don't like detecting, I think it'll be a lot easier to sell your detector if it's a good brand and a quality detector...not some cheap-o Walmart one.

Maybe this site will help: http://metaldetectorreviews.net/

BTW, I have a Bounty Hunter. It is a decent detector, but certainly not the best out there.

If u want to waste money buy for cheap.
I use Minelab Explorer. This one seems to be one of the best. White's is Ok as well. XLT especially.

Oh no, it looks like my Bounty Hunter may indeed be a cheap-o Walmart detector! :)

The Garrett Ace 250 is about the hottest entry-level machine out there. Runs around $280 or so. It is considered by many to be a lot of detector for the money.

Fisher is supposed to have a competing unit, the F2, out by Christmas. Won't be much experience out there with it by then though. You can get a lot of info/help on the Ace on detecting forums. I am saying this even though my main detector is currently a Fisher F75.

Kellyco is pretty much the Wal-Mart of online detector sales and some people don't like that, but I have had good luck with them. Low prices and quick shipping. (kellycodetectors.com)

    Have fun,
