Hello guys, I have a 1962-D 1C that I need some help and advice for. I need help determining a grade before I send it off to get it professionally graded. I would consider this a MS67. I looked at the other MS67 in this coin and they have many scratch marks on it. I can only see 2 very small scratches on my coin with the naked eye. This coin is pretty red and shiny in person but the camera I use doesn't justify the color and shade well. Also, there is a piece of gum residue on the left bottom of the Lincoln memorial building. Should I use a wet q-tip to try to get it off or should I leave it?? Thanks ( I put it next to a 2017 penny to compare the shine but I don't think it made a difference)
OK, I'm not too good at this, but first, the 2017 is Red, the 1962 is RB at best. The grade of MS67 is not that common and I don't think this one makes it. Let's see what others say.
Hi there! It's awfully tough to get a MS67 grade on most of these as they were known to have been poorly struck in general and also were shipped to be rolled in ballistic bags of 5,000 coins, which meant they tended to be banged around a lot. It would have to be a very sharp strike with no distracting marks to make this grade. So, at this point I would say do not spend the money on having this slabbed until you can find some very good photos to compare to.
IMHO your coin could be ms63 red brown, .30 cent in current guide...ms67 red would be nice at 3000$..a 65red only 20$....to put in prospective...if you had a 2500 box of original bank rolls of 62-d red cents...you might find a 66 and few rolls of ms65. Most will be under ms65..how many times would you be willing to spend 25$ to grade a 20$ coin.
If you look at the reverse, there is damage on the lower left of the Lincoln memorial. I think that alone would keep this coin from grading any higher than 58 imho
