I got this along with a couple of other colonials. The date is gone, but I thought I'd be able to figure it out, but I'm at a dead end. It's tough to see, but I almost think I see a '6', but I could just be seeing things.

What I do know is that it's of the narrow shield, curved plow beam type, but that's really as far as I've gotten. The thing that is throwing me off the most is the shape of the plow handles. I can't match them to any on coinfacts.

My end goal is to figure out the date and which die set it is. Can anyone help?

I don't think your gonna get a date on that it looks wiped.

I'd think you might have to go by die markers, to get the possible die markers.

Yeah, it's pretty toasted, but I would think by suing die combinations, etc, I would be able to come up with a date.

Huh? Do you mean - 'might have to go by die markers, to get the possible date'?

Luckily, this isn't my only NJ Copper, so it's not like it's my 'prized' colonial. Just would be nice if I could attribute a date to it.

There is enough visible on the coin to attribute it. I'm not near a reference at this time. :sorry:

I meant more of what Insider said.
I wouldn't even know where to start.

The position of the ears, the shape of the plow, position of the letters and stars to the shield points at the top and sides. Easy with a reference book. Lot's of different varieties so possibly a fifteen-minute job. Less if you are lucky. Start with the '87's

I agree, and while I don't have a reference book, I tried matching with coins on coinfacts and coins.nd.edu, and can't come up with a solid match for die sets. I've gotten close, but not 100%.

I can look closer when I get the chance, but it looks like a 1786 23-P.

Isn't the 'P' reverse the PLURIBS reverse, with the laurels under the shield? If I'm correct, then the reverse couldn't be the P rev.

No, the p reverse, uncapitalized, is the PLURIBS variety.

    It is a 23-P.

Yes, you were correct to begin with. Thanks!
