Good additional information @zumbly (that I had forgotten to include) - thanks for posting it. I hope that you do post that photo, there are not that many online.

Severus Alexander find me at NumisForums

Such an unusual portrait on that Maximinus as Caesar, @jamesicus. I like it!

I believe the quarter folles (I have one too, below) were only issued at Siscia, @Alegandron. No idea why...

It is unusual to find a fully silvered Severus follis ..........

RIC VI, Londinium, No. 63a - Severus as Caesar:

    [IMG][IMG]
    SEVERVS NOBILIS C ..............................................
    GENIO POPV -- LI ROMANI

    11.3 gm.
    Fully silvered -- pitted obverse.
    Draped bust.
As depicted in RIC Volume VI, Plate 1.

Here's my Antioch follis (29mm, 10.4g) placed next to Siscia quarter-follis (19mm, 2.5g) for comparison. The latter, at a quarter the weight of a follis, is a much thinner coin.

  9. Here is my Severus as Augustus. Super rare coin. It's a variant of RIC VI 46 with its FELIX reduced to FEL like some of the Contantius coins. sevlond.jpg

Here is another Severus II quarter-follis, this one with the short obverse legend:

    9781.jpg
    SEVERVS NOB C
RIC Siscia, 171a, "R" (less so now) plate IX
    Failmezger 59
    2.88 grams. 12:00

Here is my site in the quarter-follis denomination:

  11. Here is my Severus as Augustus Trier mint. When I first saw this coin I thought it was gold. The silvering has a lovely golden tinge. One of my best coins. sevtrier.jpg

  12. I also own a Severus follis as Caesar from the Lyons mint. Fully silvered. sevlug.jpg

I have a Severus II Quarter Folle, Siscia mint, not a perfect example as it is a bit pitted. Anyway, interesting and historical thread @jamesicus

Such an interesting and convoluted period in history. Needs an HBO mini series!

I have learned so much about this time from you, James. Thanks for the great posts.

Something along the lines of I Claudius but based in the period of the tetrachy. All of the scheming and machination would make for interesting viewing.

That is a really great coin @Allergies collector! Thank you for posting it. My example lacks the silvering that yours has.
