Your coin is what is commonly known as a railroad rim, otherwise known as a partial collar error. That is why it is bigger in diameter than it is supposed to be.

As for the "apparently" missing plating, given the look of the coin that part looks like an acid job to me - someone has intentionally removed the plating.

Hi Rick. Many years ago it seams like several types of doubling were all dumped into the same term, machine doubling. Is DDD a type of machine doubling? One other question on the OPs 1943 if you will. Someone was talking about the plating being pushed over like on the 3. Is that different than DDD? I know this same look can be seen on some processed steel cents as well. How do you tell the difference between these types of doubling? Please set me straight.

Somewhere around here I have a perfect copy of a US Jefferson nickel the size of a quarter. It was made that way as a novelty. I got it in a job lot of mixed exonumia. What the likelihood or possibility may be that your piece also was created as a novelty I couldn't comment upon, but it seemed like a good idea to suggest the alternate possibility. If I can find that "nickel" and not too much time has elapsed, I'll post a photo.
