I've never especially sought out errors in any of my coin collecting efforts, but this one came by cheap on eBay. A fairly dramatic die clash on a denarius of Marcus Aurelius. Just got it in the mail, so I haven't attributed it yet. Clash is visible on the reverse; back of Marcus's head and some legend incuse. I vaguely thought it was a brockage, but Doug Smith's site was very helpful in clearing this up for me: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/brock.html Thanks Doug! Any other guidance, examples, etc. welcome - I'm a noob about this stuff. These are the seller's photos - he takes better pictures than I do:
Die clashes are a bit common on ancients. I have a few and enjoy them. They're usually isn't any premium on them unless the whole reverse is the impression alone, like a Brockage.
That's a neat coin @Marsyas Mike. Like you I do not seek these out. I have a couple, but I will need to look them up.
Nice one. You will find more with some rulers than others. Perhaps some mintmasters cared more than others??? Aurelius is not one of the more common ones that I have seen.
Very cool! My only die-clash is this denarius of Julia Maesa, whose left-facing incuse profile is visible behind Juno on the reverse: Julia Maesa, AD 218-225 Roman AR denarius, 19.70 mm, 2.70 g, 12h Rome, AD 218-220 Obv: IVLIA MAESA AVG, bare-headed and draped bust right Rev: IVNO, Juno standing left, holding patera and scepter Refs: RIC 254; BMCRE 67; Cohen 16; RCV 7750; Thirion 401.
Nice one Mike. I have a few, I think they're interesting. Here's one of my clearest examples. Elagabalus denarius 3.1g. 21mm. O: Laureate and draped bust right, IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG R: Elagabalus standing left holding patera and club (within clashed bust left), sacrificing over altar, bull lying behind altar, star in left field, INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG - RIC 88
Thank you all for so many interesting insights and examples (Roman Collector and Nemo - I'm covetous of both those coins). I doubt I'll actively pursue ancient errors, but they do add an interesting side to collecting.
