Here is a recent addition to my tetradrachm hoard, a Macrianus. A usually tough/expensive emperor to acquire. This didn't cost too much, less than $80 total. Very scarce to rare in tetradrachm form. Macrianus (260 - 261 A.D.) Egypt, Alexandria Potin Tetradrachm O: A K T ΦIOVΛ MAKPIANOC E CEB, laureate and cuirassed bust right. R: Eagle standing left, wreath in its beak.L A (regnal year = 1) 22.4mm 10.44g Alexandria Milne 4056, Köln 3011, Dattari 5380, Emmett 3785; Sear 10816.
WOW! Very nice... that Usurper is purdy hard to find as a Tet... It is all there...great looking obv/rev - always a winner with an Eagle for me! LA - I got beat up for not knowing this is Year One... Or actually, since you are from the Area - Los Angeles! My Macrianus is an Ant: RI Macrianus 260-261 CE Usurper AR 22mm 4.4g BI Ant Spes Publica star Sear 3.10811. RIC 13 pg 581
Macrinus' imperial issues are pricey, but many provincial issues of his are quite affordable, such as this one from Antioch: Macrinus, Augustus AD 217-218 Roman provincial Æ 19 mm, 3.80 g, 12:00 Syria: Seleucis and Pieria, Antioch ad Orontem Obv: ΑVΤ Κ Μ Ο C ΜΑΚΡΙΝΟC CЄ, laureate and cuirassed bust right Rev: Large SC, Δ/Є above and beneath; all within laurel wreath interrupted by star above Refs: SGI 2949; BMC 20. 198,385; SNG Cop. 233; McAlee 728.
@Roman Collector, If I may, @Mat ain't showing a Macrinus but a Macrianus instead. A really good catch, his coins are scarce, and alexandrian tets of his are pretty rare. I would gladly welcome that one in my trays !! Q
Nice coins. Do I hear a Quietus or Macrianus minor (children)? I learn a lot when I am forced to review the usurpers. Thank you. Nice review: http://www.roman-emperors.org/galusurp.htm#Note 2
Nice score there. I've poked around and his ants are selling for $500-$600 or more, from what I could find online. I've got a severely worn one from an uncleaned hoard. The usual practice for hoard dealers is to pick out any of the good coins and sell them separately. So my cost for the coin was about $1.50 given what I paid for the hoard divided by the number of coins in it.
Thanks @Severus Alexander. I'll poke around some more for current auctions. I'd like to get a Quietus as well and also an Aemilianus, but the latter are pretty expensive, too.
Great capture @Mat !! Cool posts guys!!! I snagged this Ant from FORVM, primarily because they had a convenient lay-a-way Silver antoninianus, RSC IV 11, RIC V 11, SRCV III 10807, VF, Antioch (Antakya, Turkey) mint, weight 2.899g, maximum diameter 24.0mm, die axis 180o, obverse IMP C FVL MACRIANVS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right; reverse ROMAE AETERNAE (to eternal Rome), Roma, helmeted, seated left on shield, Victory in extended right, spear in left.
