Thank's guys for all your feedback on my "wanna-be" coins, haha. This is how we learn, in part. So, I will have others, but THIS ONE, this 1965 is looking kind of special, but I suppose we think of "our own" as "special." But here's the '65, and I'm gaining info right and left from you guys, so thank you and keep the devil's advocacy coming (j/k)! Hey, I just want your rigorously honest opinions, if not flat out brutally frank! I know I can take it, and I doubt it's hurting the feelings of the coins . So what about this . . ."stuff" going on on this bright & shiny one??
I'm pretty torn on this one. Your coin shows what seems to me to be either MD or DDD on both the obverse and reverse. When you see doubling ob both sides 99/100 times that is the case. However it also seems to bear a likeness to this variety: http://varietyvista.com/01b LC Doubled Dies Vol 2/1965PDDO003.htm not sure but with better pictures some of the wiser members could help you more. I'm thinking 85% chance it's just die deterioration, 15% chance it could possibly be a late die state of DDO-003 which shows die deterioration in addition to the legitimate doubled die. Once again wait for the "pros" to weigh in.
That is some severe die wear. Split serifs on IBE say it could be a DDO. Can you take a better photo of the L in full light? Most of the motto shows Die trails. The reverse is DDD
There are no serifs on IBE to be split. My guess is that much of what's being seen is due to what the OP is using to image the coin.
Good call BOOKS, the possible notching is what I was looking at, also the raised area on the L might match a DDO on Wexlers site.
Would certainly like to either have better pics or coin in hand, but I question die deterioration as the cause of what I'm seeing on the reverse (will reserve judgment on the obverse in the absence of better photo's). Unlike Wexler's examples of DDD, the shelving I'm noting on the "A" of "AMERICA"; the "E" and "D" of "UNITED", and; the serif split on the first "S" of "STATES", all appear to be same-sided. Bottom line to me: If he was selling it, I'd pay a small premium (as I question actual condition of coin) without seeing better photo's . . . But then again, as attributed to Mr. Barnum, "There's a sucker born every minute"! Semper Fidelis
I knew what you were alluding to, but just felt I'd add that, hopefully for the greater good and to be taken however one sees fit. Notching would indeed be the proper term if present, but I still think photos taken using a different method would tell a much different story.
Could you crop and full image the last photo? this one 15067327348821768932731.jpg File size: 402.3 KB Views: 0
