I am looking for advice as to wether or not I should have this coin re-graded. As you can see it currently has an ACG Grade of MS-62. Also can anyone tell me if the grading looks to be correct? - thanks
Photos of a toned coin can be tricky to confidently make a Mint State call on. But wow that "Liberty" looks sharp. And sometimes I think the grading services are pretty lenient on these. I think it should be examined in hand by someone knowledgeble though.........JMHO.
The reverse on the coin is beautiful, though I can't tell from the pic if the obverse exhibits luster. It almost looks cleaned but again could be the camera angle. If it has luster and you don't think it's been cleaned; I would go for a re-grade. If for no other reason than to get it into a holder that people put more trust in (NGS, PCGS or ANACS).
IMHO MS-62 seems pretty generous. I'd either keep it as is, or submit it in the slab for crossover with a minimum grade stated if they still do that sort of thing.
It is my understanding it was never cleaned. Thank you all for the reply. I am considering selling and I want to ensure I know what I have.
I was thinking what McOrange said, the seeming lack of luster concerns me a bit, could just be the pics. Nice coin tho'., and a respected certification would be nice as you try to sell. So I guess I'm arguing both sides.
I think cross-overs work only between PCGS and NGC. I'm pretty certain this would need to be freed from the current holder and graded from scratch. I can say that this particular holder won't help you sell it. I know that I would look at this as a raw coin were I purchasing it for my own collection.
Thanks again. I am trying to determine if it is worth regrading in order to sell it. that depends on the value and I have no idea what it would be worth. Does anyone have a ball park idea of the value?
Hmmm ballpark...If it's problem free I'll say $350+ as a mid AU, to a $1,000+ as a 63 in a PCGS/NGC holder. So there are price jumps here to consider. Currently showing 78 views and not a lot of input. Another day or two may get you more opinions.
Are you talking a regrade thru the big two PCGS or NGC if so that coin would drop Substantially, i think a 62 is asking allot here, so if you did regrade i would expect Less.
the problem is not necessarily with the coin but with people that did the grading Many off the wall or secondary companies always tend to grade high and have Less scrutiny, there for almost 99.9 percent of the time, top tier companies like PCGS or NGC will give you a lesser number, i am sure others will agree with that Statement, in currency true 100 percent of the time...LOL
So I inherited a box of coins. This one imparticular was held in high regard according to the notes in the box. I dont know much more about it. If it were regraded and dropped substantially is is still worth $300 to $400? All that said I do have a whole bunch of Morgan silver dollars ranging from 1870's through 1880's and graded by PCGS, PCI, ICG, NGC, and ANACS from MS-62 to MS-64. Perhaps there lies the real value. If you can't tell I am new to this and learning as I go to figure out what I have.
If you can sell on eBay you can see what similar coins are selling for. Look at their sold listings. Would your 20 center sell better (say on eBay) in the current holder or in a top tier holder that says AU or "cleaned"? That is the question as there is a real chance that resubmitting will get a downgrade.... I wonder if you could find a qualified and trustworthy dealer to examine it in hand and advise you. I might be sticking my neck out but from what I can see I would expect that 300 would be the low end.
Since you're considering selling I would send it to PCGS. You can try and do a crossover to the save the grade but would have to send it back in if it didn't work. I would send it in. You won't get PCGS or even NGC prices outside of their holders and would be relying on someone who collects nostalgic slabs as well with that one. PCGS takes crossovers from any holder. NGC only takes PCGS. Yes you can state a lower minimum grade or just say cross at any grade.
Regarding your comment on currency, PCGS is the WORST, followed by CGA & then PMG. The BEST for grading currency, by far, is CGC. Joe Bissell is NOT in anyone's pocket like the other 3 are with auction houses & such. When PCGS started grading currency, the graded like 18 PERFECT 70's. NO ONE has ever graded a note a 70, & some of PCGS notes were graded 3 to 4 points to high. Most dealers, myself included, would not even carry them.
Lol thread bump for advertising. The market has already shown PCGS and PMG are the top dogs in currency.
