This 1912 Indian $5 is my favorite Gold Coin and probably the most special coin I've got because it belonged to my grandfather and dad. Yes, handed down thru three generations. Not bad considering that portions of Nacogdoches and Leon counties in Texas were 'wet' during those periods of time, LOL... I used to think this was in VF condition but after seeing others in the same or worse shape being called AU, I'll say XF-40. wet -- able to sell alcohol/liquor license. Take Care Ben
That's a nice coin with a nice heritage. Coins are one of the only things that seem to transfer from generation to generation anymore.
Ben, I own but ONE REAL U.S. gold coin and it's a $5 Indian. My great uncle Tab showed me one when I was a small child. Actually only met Tab a few times before his death but that coin always stuck in my mind. I finally broke down and bought one about 5 years ago. Common date and may have been cleaned for all I know (gold is not my specialty) but the incuse design is just SO COOL. Just incredible looking coins and I thank you for sharing yours! clembo
From my limited experience with gold, I will pick the $ 5 Indian design followed by the $10 princess for the classics . Among moderns I use to be a firm believer in the Proof Buffalo's until I purchased a proof St Gaudens and now not so sure. Will give the Buffalo's a slight edge due to the overall design but it is a close, close call for me. Now that I think about it a bit, do not think I have ever seen or held a gold coin that I did not like. Something about that yellow metal.
Ben.. That is a really nice Indian...it is even more special sine it came down to you from such fine men! Regards, RickieB
That's is great the way your family is handing the coin down through generations:smile My favorite and only piece of gold I own is a 1907 No motto $10 Gold Indian.:thumb:
I love $5 Indians. They are a great coin and I think they are underappreciated compared to the $2 1/2 Indians.
