Found this little guy in a bargain bin at some coin shop I recently found. Looked like a goner but but a feeling it had some potential, so I got it home and used some soup , water and a light scrub with a tooth brush. End result is pretty nice. Does anyone have any advice to get it looking a bit better or should I leave it alone? thanks !

Now there will be a number of folks that say (or scream) "Ahhhh...you cleaned it!", but given the amount of green death on the coin to start, I'd say you've done well.

Given that you have a close to dead coin with only a buck on the line, you may want to try a trick used with ancients and some dug coins. Give it a good soak (read "a few days") in olive oil. Olive oil is a mild acid so it will take another layer off and hopefully loosen some of the remaining grime in the process.

That's pretty cool. And to make it better this coin is a good strike and has wonderful detail.

It's worth chemicallly stabilizing, although I don't know how.

Actually that's not bad. I wouldn't mind cleaning totally damaged or corroded copper coins as long as you don't harshly clean them. Most definately you did a good job there!

Nice find! I would agree, soak for a couple days in olive oil.

You've done a fine job cleaning it up so far.
I'm sure some of the suggestions given above will bring it along a little further.

I am very surprised no one has called him evil for cleaning the coin.

Ok I Did some finishing touches on the coin and I'm pretty pleased with it. I noticed something else about the coin that may be interesting. The bottom part of the reverse design seems to have some sort of die crack running along it. It almost looks like a double die. let me know what you guys think!

The marks you are referring to are the result of worn dies.

In this situation, I think the coin is better now, before cleaning it was a worthless blob, now it is a cleaned flying eagle cent . A " good " cleaning in my opinion.

PS. That's a sweet coin OP. Only thing that would have been better is if you found it in a roll o fpennies.

Not a doubled die, but Longacre doubling. Not worn dies but sharp new ones.
