Here is a nice Bust Half Dollar which looks to be in 40ish condition, maybe 45. Looks to have been cleaned but that was figured into the price. I'll have to wait until the coin arrives to verify everything, but the filled (rev As, circled) ID as a O-106 (R-2). Just another addition to the BCBHD Collection which focuses on those $100 coins. What kind of thoughts do you have on it? Good or Bad, please chime in Take Care Ben
Looks nice to me. What's going on with the last A in America ? Clash or just a light hit next to it ?
I think that it is an overall nice Bust Half Dollar! I also think that you are right on the grade and it could teter either way, EF-40 to EF-45 with a hint of Mint Luster remaining. Although there appears to be some slight rubbing lines behind Miss Liberty's bust, I am unsure of a cleaning but possibly an old dipping. Frank
What does ID as a O-106 (R-2) mean? I just started collecting a couple of months ago and I bought my first Capped Bust Half last weekend - an 1826. Does anyone know any books about half dollars? Thanks.
Howdy wfcanipe - Welcome to the Forum !! It means the coin is attributed as Overton variety 106 with a rarity of 2 on a scale of 1 thru 8. Overton wrote the book on Bust Half dollar varieties. There are many books on half dollars, it depends on which type of half dollar you mean.
I like how the Bust Halfs and Liberty Seated Halfs look. What books would you recommend for them? Can you give me a full name for the Overton book?
There is more than one edition, I'll let those who are more well versed in the subject clarify which one is best.
Here are some excellent choices. Personally, I have Bust Half Fever, by Ed Souders, and the 1st, 2nd, and 4th editions of Al Overton's Bust Half literature plus several other "wildcat' editions offered by other luminaries of the hobby. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b...words=bust+half+dollars&Go.x=12&Go.y=10&Go=Go Take Care Ben
