....and that's the only real problem I have with it the seller is straightforward about it. "I took it to a coin show and he said it was a die transfer 'copy'. All of the key dates and semi key dates that I bought from this estate turned out to be copys. And that is the way I am selling it. This is a "NO RESERVE" 1 day auction. " Going to have to keep an eye on who wins it and how long after it pops up on ebay again.
Found another problem I DID find a point in this auction that I do take issue with. Bidder ID kept private. I just emailed the seller with this. "Hi, I noticed that you are selling a coin that you know is a fake and you are very up front about that. I commend you for this. However, why the private ID? If someone buys that coin to resell it as legitimate it needs to be known. It happens a lot and knowing who the bidder is makes it easier to keep someone from unknowingly get ripped off." It would appear to me that this seller will "honestly" sell a counterfeit while, at the same time, washing his hands of someone getting ripped off down the road. Damn shame if that's the case.
What exactly is a die transfer copy? I always thought that if a coin was a copy, it had to have "copy" stamped on it. If this crap is allowed ot continue, then I have to question all kinds of coins that are sold.
Copys or replicas MUST be clearly stamped on either obvers or reverse, AND must be listed in the title block of the auction. There have been alot of these 21 Walkers fakes sold as real from crook sellers. This will most likley sell to a crook buyer. Note: Seller knows this is against the rules I 'm sure.....24 hour listing / private auction is always a hint
The law you refer to has only been around since the '70s. So there are literally millions of fakes out there without the word COPY on them that were made before the law existed. Also you have to consider, that laws only keep honest people honest. The crooks who make these coins just ignore the law and make and sell them anyway. As to your first question, there are several ways to make fake dies. There is the spark erosion or electro-type, or you can make a cast of a genuine coin and then transfer it to a die.
" Spark erosion " I believe refers to what machinists call EDM- Electrical Discharge Machining. I have several of them in my shop / day job. A female version of the coin in either carbon or copper could be cast from a genuine, then used as an electrode.
