Can people please get back on topic. I also would like to know if anyone has had a coin graded at a show by PCGS and how it compared (grade wise) with a coin that was sent in to be graded.

I'm afraid I've got to disagree with you on this count OCD ( :D ).

Speaking from experience, I've probably been disappointed almost half the time by PCGS taking my coins and / or my customers coins back to Newport Beach before returning them to me at my expense after I'd submitted for Show Grading late on a Thursday at FUN or at Baltimore. This has happened a few times now, and I've observed it happening to other submitters as well.

To claim that the PCGS policies are not misleading is a stretch, when they clearly imply that submitters paying the grading fees for Show Services will have their coins back by the "End of Show". I can recall at least one occasion when PCGS left the show a full day early, and took all of the ungraded coins home with them.

Not only does it disappoint my customers and I that we don't get our coins back when expected, but it takes extra money out of our pockets to boot. Worst of all, while my customers have been polite in not pointing it out to me, they've doubtless been bothered by the fact that, as a PCGS Authorized Dealer, I cannot guarantee that they'll have their coins back when they should. That reflects poorly on me.

It's great that you apparently have had a better experience with show grading, but I don't think you are qualified to speak for those who have not.

They grade them with the same standard either way, there's not better show grades if that's what you're asking.

The only difference is the cost, the grading does not change. Grading is subjective one man grade may not be another mans grade. The thing about grading is you get an independent third party opinion.

Actually I was thinking they might not be as good or consistant. That at the show they might be more pressure to hurry up and turn them out becasue people are waiting for them.

ToughCOINS I understand your disappointment. As a dealer, a few dollars more here and there takes food off your table. While as a hobbiest, its just a little less to spend on a hobby. Plus you don't want to disappoint a customer becasue they might go to a differnt dealer.

It's almost a bait and switch. "Hey guys - here's a good deal on grading! Woops - sorry we've got to take them with us and you'll have to pay extra to get them back from us."

I'm sure they would NEVER offer to pay for shipping if their work isn't completed by the end of the show. But they should.

I have never claimed to speak for anyone but myself nor do I claim to be qualified on anything other then my hobby of coins.
I spoke as a long time member of P.C.G.S. do I believe that they can do no wrong, no not saying that. I have had my differences with them but they have always been fair with me. If you understood the process that each coin goes through when sent into P.C.G.S. you might have a better understanding as to why the coin would be returned to Newport. I cannot come close to understanding your disappointment that you went through with your service & that of your customers. The only thing that I would say is that they wanted the grade right before they returned the coin. The facts & prices stated by me came from the current P.C.G.S. info. I hope this has helped you and or others on this subject C U at the next show.

At least inasmuch as what they disclose in their grading videos, I think get what's involved in PCGS grading the coins, and apparently as much as PCGS knows it's own productivity and time constraints. It's a complex business, but they are well-compensated to manage that complexity.

That's fine . . . getting the grade right before returning the coin is worth the $32 per coin fee charged for Regular Service. The $33 difference between Regular Service (coins up to $3000) and $65 Show Economy Service (also up to $3000) is compensation for getting it done by the end of the show, and has nothing to do with their commitment to getting it right.

If they are accepting Show Service quantities that are stressing their capacity to successfully deliver before the show ends, they should downshift and proactively advise submitters that they are cutting back to accepting only submissions for regular Non-Show Service, or reactively rebate submitters the difference in service costs after failing to deliver on time.

I applaud PCGS for doing a good job in the grading room. Unfortunately, they roll the dice on the sales end, and leave their customers dissatisfied when they sometimes fail to deliver on the Show Service they advertised and then over-committed to.

I recognize it's difficult for PCGS to predict how much workload they will receive at the shows, but they need to develop a better business solution than simply saying sorry to their dissatisfied customers.

Thanks baseball21, I needed that! I also appreciate all the responses from all. I actually asked the question for my nephew, he's the one with the high end coins, not me. I will not name him cause I don't want to break his anonymity. Oh forgive me that's a saying from a different program. j/k Back to the drawing board! wine.gif

I was right! Your eyes are brown! So far, all of your posts have been BS. Why don't you join a knitting circle?

The graders sent to shows by the major TPGS are NOT second team players. Your coins get the same treatment they would at home. Sometimes, there is one less grader on the box. Anyway, lots of folks like to try to slip something by at a show. Others, try to find which graders are at the show and make the decision to submit coins to the home office. On some occasions, walk thru coins are not returned at the show due to the need for further study. I should think in limited cases such as this the submitter would be glad.

PS Old Coin Dawg, asked: "What was the name of the band you played in? From what I heard you were the lead horn.":yawn:

You must be psychic! I played trumpet in the Boston College Screaming Eagles Marching Band for two years. :D:p
