Waiting on my son to get home and send me better photo. Also instructed him to weight the coin, check with a magnet, and do not clean. Also instructed him to take to a dealer to see if it can be authenticated. He bought this off a guy who said he won it in a card game. Paid $100 for it. I pretty sure he has a new $100 paper weight or an interesting pocket piece, but what if it's real? We are all going to have to wait...
All 1893-S Morgans were made from a single die pair. One way to tell if it's genuine is the diagonal die line running through the top of the T in Liberty. Your pictures aren't clear enough to tell if it's there or not, but the odds of it being genuine are quite remote.
I'll check that when I get better photo. I told my son that if the guy was desperate for money, he could have taken it to any coin shop and sold it for a lot more. I doubt that it's real, but it's still fun finding out.
If it was real, it would be valued somewhere in the neighborhood of $5-10K, possibly more. Do you think it's real?
Well his photo skills are not too great. I sent him this link, http://coinauctionshelp.com/1893-sauthenticateID.html#.WcRwYciGOUk He's going to take to LCS tomorrow. I told him not to tell dealer how much he paid for it. I told him to tell them I gave it to him. That way he won't get embarrassed. I think the 3 is hinky, looks like retooled 8.
Yep the inside top part of the 3 should curl around and ball up sorry I think it's retooled 98 hey at least there's silver there!
Not a chance. 1893-S coins are Far Date; this one is a Near Date. The date is a whole denticle too far left.
Not even a retooled coin, just a bad fake. Both the letters and the stars were very poorly engraved, and that's a typical fake patina. Reminds me of the time when 15 year-old me thought he scored a deal sniping a $0.99 Trade dollar on eBay. Thankfully I was only out $0.99+shipping from China...
The font for the numbers is way off and it looks like the eagle beak is too open...maybe these might help. Its no 1893s but check the 1883 font and compare.
I think we have all made this mistake bidding online but only make this mistake once. I no longer bid on EBTH.com because of this. I wish it only cost me a $100... closer to $1000
There are 3 types of coin collectors; 1) those who bought fakes, 2) those who will buy fakes, and 3) those who have bought fakes and don't know it yet
Same here. Very true. But you forgot the fourth one: 4. Those who don't care about anything but a large payout or whatever they can sell it for.
