Septimius Severus, FVNDATOR PACIS

Hello All,

I was happy to add a new coin to my Septimius Severus collection this week. FVNDATOR PACIS is a reverse legend that I had been looking for for some time with the elusive condition/price matrix always being not appropriate for the purchase. Luckily I found a nice piece over at Ken Dorney's place. Great price, great coin, fast shipping. All around, many huzzahs for Ken.

A very respectable denarius. Love the portrait.

 

Nice looking obverse and a cool collection! I'll post my first SS coin, I see you have one of these in your collection as well.

 

@Bing I really like the strong legends and detail on the reverse of yours. I don't think I could have bought one like yours without doubling the price though.

 

@David Atherton Thank you for the compliment. Like I mentioned to Bing, a few more details cost many more dollars so I found what I found to be a very well priced nice example.

Nice buy, Nicholas. This is a pretty cool type, and I can see why you were attracted to that example.

This was the second Sep Sev denarii to join my collection, and I really like that the reverse figure can clearly be identified as the emperor.

Can anyone explain what the significance of FVNDATOR PACIS is?

My last S.S. coin was a provincial...

 

It means "the founder of peace". Of course, you need to kill all your rivals and enemies to get the title.

 

"Bringer of peace" or, in this case, having defeated everyone stupid enough to oppose me and having punished those who supported the wrong side back in 193. 'Founder' seems a little excessive but SS was not a modest fellow.

@zumbly Yes, that is quite the strong rendering on the reverse. You can see the tip of his beard sticking out from under the veil!

 

@gogili1977 I like the portrait on yours, very sharp! Also the branch in his hand on the reverse is very cute for lack of a better word!

Here's one of my favorite Septimius coins in my collection. It has a ragged flan and the S in SEVERVS is nearly obliterated, but to me it adds character.


Septimius Severus. AR denarius, Rome mint, struck 202–10 CE; 3.32g. BMCRE 370, Hill 900, RIC 299, RSC 713. Obv: SEVERVS – PIVS AVG; head laureate right. Rx: VICTORIAE around / AVGG in exergue; Victory, holding whip, in biga galloping right. Rare; only three specimens in the Reka Devnia hoard. EF.

 

Great questions guys! This one was given to me, as I do not collect Fourrees, nor am I an expert by any means. Additionally, my Empire coinage skills are zilch. I am one off those scarcer breeds of Republic collector.

It was a "mystery" coin to me as to which Emperor until I posted sometime ago and asked who it was. I beleive it was @dougsmit who helped identify it for me.

Agreed, the features and details are great! I will have to dig it out of the Safe sometime to look at it again, however, yes, it seems to be silvered base metal. Perhaps on official dies!
