Here's a section that is aimed at those members who come from anywhere within the British Commonwealth. What is your favourite Canadian coin design? My favourite is the design of the 1935 Silver Jubilee commemorative silver $1.The obverse is the same used on coins from New Zealand,Southern Rhodesia & on an Australian 2/- coin. The reverse design is the famous Voyageur design depicting a Native Canadian,a fur trapper from the Hudson's Bay Company,& the Northern Lights. The design is by Emmanuel Hahn, who was also a sculptor, I believe. Can any Canadian member please provide a biography about Emmanuel Hahn? When you mention about the design, please give some details about the designer(s).
Emanuel Hahn was born in Germany in 1881 and moved with his family to Toronto in 1888.In 1903 he returned to Germany to study and came back to Toronto in1906.In 1910 he started a career as an instructor at the Ontario College of Art. He designed several commemorative memorials to Canadian soldiers who fought and died during WW1. Hahn also designed the caribou for the 25¢ peice and the image or the schooner Bluenose for the 10¢ peice, designs which are still in use today. The one dollar reverse shows a voygeur and a native paddling a conoe past a small island with 2 windswept trees and nothern lights in the background. The canoe has several bundles of furs and the initials HB for Hudson's Bay Company,a prominent participant in Canada's history. It's also interesting to note that the loon dollar was supposed to feature the voyageur design but the dies were lost in transit from Ottawa to the mint in Winnipeg so for security reasons the loon design was adpoted. I liked the Canadian quarter with the moose on it. I know it was not really a moose but since Western NewYorkers drink Moosehead beer, that is what we called it in my undergrad days. The moosehead quarter. I believe that Elizabeth II was on the face. Haven't seen the quarter for a while. Other then that, there is a Canadian coin sitting in my oldest kid's room with kids holding hands. Doesn't look like real money but then again we never considered Canadian money to be real money anyway but now the laugh might be on us as I watch the dollar fall.
I would have to go to my friends store but there is a couple I like. Especially the ones with the ships (galleons you know the big sailboats) on them. Also teh coloured maple leaf one is nice. Mind the language - this is a family site.
I like the Canadian Large Cents from the late 1800's and the early 1900's. I really not that fond of Queen Victoria but really like the bust of Edward VII and George V. What really attracted me to these coins were the reverse design. I thought it showed a lot of class. For what it's worth I like the Half Dollar from 1959 to present. I think the portrait of Queen Elizabeth, the young head, is great. However again I'm attracted to the reverse side of the coin. catman
I have to go with the 1967 Centennial Dollar. We have lots of Canada Geese here in Columbus, Ohio and a V of them flying overhead is something I never tire of seeing.
