Hard to tell from the photos, but since it was a piece of jewelry in the past, I think you can count on it having been improperly cleaned during its life.
The four marks/indentations on the rim, evenly spaced. That's where it was held. I would say it's a details coin.
I'm not a gold guy, so I'd rather protect your interests and not give a value. Hopefully others will chime in.
Well you can start at the the minimum value, which is the melt value but that would be a sin to melt it, but there is definitely numistic value to it not sure what.
If I was in the market, I don't think I'd pay more than $125. There are a couple of much nicer gold coins here in the classifieds for $200, and this isn't half the coin they are. Just my unknowledgeable 2¢...
Yes, cleaned and jewelry damage. I buy and sell a lot of gold.. I would go maybe $90-$100 tops on this one. (and it's not a proof ) For the price you paid, I would try to return it if you still can.
