Potential future value of 2017 "P" penny bank rolls?

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by WhipperSnapper 88, Sep 19, 2017.

  1. I went to the bank the other day to get some penny rolls to search and discovered they had a bunch of the 2017 P rolls full of brand spanking new shiny pennies.

I had actually considered buying one of these rolls on ebay to put away and am now glad i waited. I snapped about ten of those buggers up and put them away.

Just wondering you guys' opinion on the prospects for these rolls to appreciate in value? I figure in about 5 years or so these rolls might well fetch $10 apiece or more, given they're already trending at $3.99 on ebay.

So, these rolls are unopened, bank wrapped, and full of uncirculated coins, just to be clear.

What do you all think? What might the future value of 2017 "P" penny bank rolls be, if any at all? Doesnt matter to me either way but its interesting to ponder.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

With billions of them being minted, I don't see them ever being worth more than 50 cents a roll.

  4. True enough, billions are being made, but the amount that remain uncirculated in never opened bank wrapped rolls will be far fewer.

I don't think that they will appreciate enough to pay their rent.

  7. Lol, you're probably correct, at least not in our lifetimes, right?

No matter, i just collected them because they are a one year thing and are historic in their own right.

In ten years I'd say about a dollar, fifty cents for the face value and fifty cents for the "dealer nuisance" charge.

Would I consider putting aside 1-2 rolls? Maybe. Anything more than that would be a waste of space...

Agree! I save 2 unopened rolls of each denomination each year for both P and D mints.

Because they are different from the norm, many people will set some aside for the future only to find out they are still only worth their face value 50-60 years later. The supply will always be greater than the demand.

Not to be morbid, historical value might be sadly imposed by North Korea forcing melt value to be realized dependent on how well this UN speech goes today.

I put a few up that I got for face value. The only hope of appreciation would be for gem BU coins, but with everyone...and I do mean everyone hoarding unopened rolls the supply will greatly outweigh the demand. I would almost be willing to predict uncirculated d mint rolls would be worth more in the future since no one is hoarding those. (Not that those either would be worth an more than a pittance.) Just my opinion

Wasn't trying to repeat your points...you were typing as I was typing apparently.

Not necessarily. Many are being salted away. They are a certain longer term loser.

These were selling for high premiums, so lots of people are putting them away. I'm still waiting for my rolls of Bicentennial Quarters and Unc 1976 $2 bills to go up . Like others have said, put away a roll or 2 and spend the rest

They'll be worth no more than face value imho. Even in mint condition. Unless someone on the Bay ponies up for them despite their being only worth FV.

A good example is the 1976 bicentennial quarters, many people held onto those 41 years ago hoping they would fetch a premium somewhere down the line. That line continues to stretch though, as I find AU examples in pocket change fairly frequently all these years later. Bring a roll of MS 1976 quarters to a dealer and theyll most likely politely decline.

I see it being the same deal with these 2017P cents.
