I am beginning to have a fair collection of ancients, mostly Greeks, as I think Greek coins are the most beautiful and creative coins ever produced. I'm trying to get the best coins I can afford from as many Greek Cities as I can, both Greece proper and the Greek colonies. I enjoy the learning the history of the coin almost as much as I enjoy the coin, almost. It has been my modus operandi to create a page of information about each location I aquire, as I do with my World Coin collection. I then keep the page with the coin in 3 ring binders. Now to the problem. I can find most of the locations at Wikipedia, others thru Google. I even have Grants' Guide to the Ancient World. But I still come across quite a few locations that I just can't find any information for. Such as "Phalanna, Thessaly", "Gergis, Troas", "Adramyteum, Mysia", for just a few examples. Doe any one know of a Reference book, or Web site where I might find more information on little know Greek communities? Any help will be greatly appreciated. JonySky

I think it would be hard to find much about the ones you mention. On the internet all I can find are the coins, so I have little hope for you. Can't recommend much.

Info on those cities isn't hard to find, just go to Google advanced search, type in Greek Cities. Then go to the bottom of the page that comes up and click on Search Within Results, then type one of the city names.

Thessaly for example will net you this - Click Here - with over 25,000 hits.

    Thanks

I do appreciate that info. I used MAMMA as my search engine till just the past few months, so there is a lot I don't know about GOOGLE. The sheer volume of 'hits' on a normal search was too much to sort thru past 4 or 5 pages. I've already found more info on Gergis than several hours of searching this past week. Which is a good thing, since I just received the coin today along with one from Metropolis. I love this information age. I remember paying $800 for a set of Britanica Encyclopedias when I came back from Vietnam, and I was only making about $600 a month as a Sgt in the Marine Corps. Now there is so much information you have to filter it to keep from being overwhelmed. Life is good. Thanks again for your assistance. Jony
