My "$50 or under per coin" 7070 journey thus far...

I've posted a lot of these in the "under $50" thread these past months mentioning they were for this. I finally bought the album itself this past week and placed what I have so far in there. Figured it was a good time to take some snapshots of where it's at now at this stage. :)

    Notes:

    • For now, the Seated and Trade $'s are going to have to wait for my coin fund to replenish a bit, so I decided to throw in OBV/REV's of the later dollars.
    • I have an 1837 NS in the Stars dime slot... an 1851 will be here today. Not sure why they included 1837 for the half-dime but not this one.
    • Now that I have all the coins in there, I can see why it's nice to target/limit the grade ranges. I had been casually type collecting at any grade for awhile before I decided to to do the 7070, so that factored in.
    • Phase II will be weeding out the hole fillers and upgrading low grade coins...Phase III may be swapping out coins to work toward a specific grade range. We'll see.
    • Exception to the under $50 thing - Capped Bust Half (Lettered) - ~$65. It's my favorite series and that one had to be in the album.
For now, I'm pleased with the AG-UNC thing as it's cool to look back and see where the coins came from out of my entire collection- LCS finds, gifts from the wife, commemorating life events, inherited coins, etc.

Will post an update when I get further down the road to completion...

    Thanks for taking a look!

Man, there is something about the look of a 7070 that is just fantastic. Love the collection, and good idea with the Morgan and Peace.

I like what you've done so far! Maybe I should break down and get a 7070 sometime...

They're cheap now, since they re-released them.

What an effort. It doesn't get much cooler than this, and you've already picked many of the coins which would be most difficult to find meeting your criteria. This is one of the neatest things any of us will see in numismatics. :)

    Agreed. And thanks!

That's high praise, Dave! Thanks for that. Awesome.

I didn't do the luster justice as you can see in the album photo but here's both sides. :)

Edit- snapped a couple through the plastic.

I've never considered getting an album until I saw this thread this is somthing that is do-able for me how much would one of those cost also I've heard that it's not good to put really nice coins in albums any reason to why? (Also very sorry if I've hijacked your thread just a quick question and as to my post before amazing collection)

    Thanks,
    Jacob

No problem man. They can be had for around $32 shipped... I got one for around that much at the local shop.

I'm not an expert on that... from what I understand album toning can be very desirable, or it can can also tone adversely and yield a result that is subjectively worse than what was there before.

It's up to you if it's worth the risk- some folks aren't into toned coins at all. I am, but I also didn't crack any of my expensive stuff for this because I didn't want to have to worry about mingling any regrets (i.e. lost $ value, getting prints or hairlines on MS coins, etc.) with the fun of it.

Awesome album, looks great! I finished my 7070 a few years ago, but have been slowly upgrading as time goes on. Started like you, bought what i could afford and looked for upgrades later.

Youngcoin - the reason many people are against putting nice coins, especially proofs, in albums is because one, you need to touch the face of the coin to insert the coins...usually a no no, and second, if the coin is not seated properly, the slides can leave hairlines on the coins.

Yeah, some fit better than others for sure... The UNC coins that I had to press down I just used my fingernail through a cotton glove on the rims and that worked pretty well.

The real pain is when I do that then it isn't straight, and I have to press the reverse to get it out and reseat. Was really tempted to put this 38-D in there as I think it would look better beside that toner nickel, but I may send it in for grading at some point. Don't feel like risking any shenanigans on the way in or out.

I thought it looked like it could be one when I bought it, but I've yet to look at it under a loupe.

I have a long way to go with identifying/confirming that stuff unless it's the kind where an S is jumping out of the D and punching me in the face.

Bravo, sir. I am a three-time 7070 veteran and I love seeing these sets in any condition. I am a tad awestruck at what you have accomplished within the $50 limitation. That's amazing.

The RE Bust half? Under $50? And not ugly? Really? I had a slightly tough time with that type 20 years ago. There were the Seated and Trade dollars, and the Classic Head cent, and then that one.

And some of the early copper must've been challenging, too, even in lower grade and accepting a little porosity. I don't see any nasty slugs there.

I was surprised when I won it for that but no complaints here. Plus, it came from Braintree, MA so I like to imagine it could have been held by John Quincy Adams or someone in the family. :)

Well, I took the under $50 thing as far as I could. It ended officially with the 20 Cent piece, as I had really wanted this one for awhile and realized I would be sad if it sold. I'm going to attempt to finish the set by selling other coins to finance the final ones so that they stay at $50 or under net going out of my pocket to keep the spirit of the set alive as I get after the seated dollars, etc.

Not doing any buying for awhile, so I thought I'd share the new members of the clan (new and some upgrades) :
