I am a 'casual' collector of early American coinage and I know that I don't have all of the 'minor' variations, but I think that I have managed a (reasonably) comprehensive collection. Can anyone please let me know if there are any 'significant' coins that I have 'missed'? Thank-you. Great collection going there! I used this site for assembling my U.S. type set. It was a great help for me. Good luck with your collecting! http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/
I think you've a nice head start on a Type 7070! There are a lot of major varieties of Large Cents and Half Cents, and I would not consider a set complete without an example of each. Half Cents: Liberty Cap Draped Bust Classic Head Braided Hair Large Cents: Flowing Hair Liberty Cap Draped Bust Classic Head Coronet Head Braided Hair
+1 and... Not sure if it qualifies as significant in your estimation, but a Copper/Nickel Indian Head Cent would be fitting. I consider it a major variety difference within the series compared to others and would be a nice one to have for your type set. The change in thickness makes it pretty undeniably different.
@Lunchbox John Thanks for that. I actually have an 1863 (Var.2) Copper-Nickel, Oak Wreath with Shield (holed) but I wasn't aware of the variation difference. I shall happily include it in my 'collection'. (EDIT>) Thanks to 'old49er's link, I shall look at filling those 'holes' in my collection.
@Johndoe2000$ No. I don't have specific 'condition goals'. I guess my 'goal' is to cover those coins that are regarded as being representative of the early history of American coinage.
I like the Draped Bust variety of cents and half cents. Need that fraction of 1/100 or 1/200 on reverse. Got us into decimal coinage, out of the £ system.
I think many others have made all the suggestions I was going to make. Wow, that fugio cent is a great addition to any collection. I got lucky finding one for under $100, but of course, it is in rough shape. At least I can read the larger words on it. I just had to get one, for the Ben Franklin design and the words, "Mind Your Business". I am not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but there is a large cent dated 1783 with George Washington on the obverse, with the words reading Washington & Independence and on the reverse, words read "Unity States of America" instead of united states. the denomination reads 1/100. That's one you may want to consider. It is obtainable even for the modest collector. I believe it is the first cent with a portrait of a president on it, which George Washington did not approve of. He stated that his face (or any president) should not be depicted on a coin because he is merely the president, and not an emperor......or something to that effect. Just a cool story behind a cool coin.
Topcat, it sounds like you're working on a Type Set. The Dansco 7070 album is considered to be the "standard" for type sets. It makes a really nice presentation, and sounds like exactly what you want. If you're doing raw coins, get this album: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/product/dansco-album-us-type-major-types-from-1800.html If you are doing slabbed coins, each of the registries offer a "7070" type set.
@Jim K Thanks. I went looking for the 1783 but the only ones I found didn't have the 'spelling mistake' on them. Here is an example of what I found. No "Unity States" there. Is there perhaps another coin?
