I am curious if Britain issued any gold sovereigns during the reign of George VI. The reason I am asking is that the British Royal Mint is selling a set of gold sovereigns including coins from the reign of Victoria, Edward VII, George V and Elizabeth II, but no coin for George VI. Were any issued?
Any currency sovereigns made during George VI reign would have been dated 1925 with George V's obverse. These coins were only made by the made to ensure they did not lose the skills of making circulation gold coins. regards, Robert
The guy on the horse is St.George, indeed killing the dragon. This famous design of Benedetto Pistrucci is still used on coins of the sovereign series. This design was introduced in 1820 and was also used on some types of silver crowns of George III,George IV, Victoria, Edward VII and the cupro-nickel crown of George VI of 1951.
Apart from British proof sovereigns dated 1937, Only South African mint issued sovereigns with George VI effigy. They issued half and full sovereigns dated 1952 with George VI. The mintage of these sovereigns are very low and just above 4,000. Good luck in your hunt. Regards, Ballabh Garg
The reason the royal mint isn't selling them is that the 1937s are very seldom encountered. Never buy any coins from the mint, as they are very overpriced.
