Well guys hello, have a question, I have been doing boxes of pennys for sometime now, and have been thinking of doing some nickle boxes....Any of you guys CRH nickles??? If so, is it worth it, or should I just stick with going thru the pennys??? Thanks for any opions on this subject......Tom
Searching nickels is absolutely worth it. In fact they are my preferred search! You will find a lot more "older" coins than any other denomination (pre 1960). These are great fun to search for die varieties etc. You will even find an occasional silver war alloy and indian head nickels! Good luck!
Well thanks for the advice, think I will get me a box tomorrow....I have had a ton of fun going thru pennys....I have went thru around 600,000 pennys in the last little while..It really does not take that much at 5000 pennys per box...It also makes the time at work go by really fast....My odds are 1.3 in 1000 will be a wheat penny..That is give or take a little......Thanks again, Tom
wow Tom 600,000 pennies - hope those are not all siting in your closet - that is over 3½ tons - just as much as my car weighs. with all those pennies -why dont you search for something worth while - example like 1999 wide am's - there are others like 83DDR,92D wide am are some recent top $$ rumor is that you might find 1 in 50,000-100,000 pennies - here is example on ebay snowman http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300155127379&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=020 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320154762570&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011
Welcome to the forum. Now for the bad news. You may have missed many, many great coins. When searching for pennies (cents), you may have missed some of the really great coins if you are not aware of what they are. For example so many miss the 95 Double Die. Some would not even notice the 72 Double Die. The 60 and 70S large and small dates. 83 reverse Double Die, 84 Double Ear. And many, many more. As to nickels, the same applies. Most people miss the really rare and/or expensive coins. And just so you know there are some that get really ticked by the terminology of PENNIES. The insist they are cents. Same people probably don't like "2 bits, fins, saw buck, one buck and if your really look closely a Nickel does not say Nickel either. Keep on looking through your PENNIES. Yoy may want to check out www.coppercoins.com for possible odd types of PENNIES.
typo correction - that is 1½ tons - not the 3½ - good grief what was i thinkin :goofer: Yeah - very true Carl - many great varieties to find on memorial cents (1959 to date) - just about a week ago was article about the 1982 small date zinc double die Rev that was just found
i have had better luck in searching nickels ,uoy can still find liberty , and buffalo nickels i rolls. and it is the only us coin that you can get a complete set from start to date by looking through rolls. i just completed a 1938 to 1961 except for three coins 1938s , 1939s, & 1950d alough i did find them for my first set. tonight i searched $100.00 and found 20 in the 40s 35 in the 50s 1 1939p 1 1943p and1 from panama. best of luck in what ever you search
What sort of boxes are you searching? Cents come in boxes of 2500, not 5000, that I know of. IMHO, searching cents and nickels is about equal in fun factor. I found a 1936 Buff in a nickel roll the other day, makes you want to run back to the bank and get everything else they have.
Sorry to be a Newb Sorry to be a clueless newb, but what are CHR and DDR? [added in edit] Oh!! Is 'DDR' Double Die Reverse?!! I assume Rev stands for Reverse; the thing is, my dad can be styled Rev. Turner, though he invariably sticks with Mr. Turner. CI -chuckles on the inside- (new net jargon invented by me 30 seconds ago, tbmk (to the best of my knowledge) Ope! There's another one i COINED. [ci] At least I know what a wide A M is. I believe there is also one with a smaller than usual space somewhere in 'AMERICA'. (can't remember where it was though) Am I right about this? Wvrick, was 'uoy' intentional Leet (computer hacker jargon for those not in the know, including me before stumbling onto the Wikipedia article), or just a typo. Peace out Homies! ps [post scriptum] 'CI' could be replaced with: Chuckling Only on the Inside Noiselessly, or COIN! [chuckles only on the inside noiselessly] I seriously doubt if 97% of percent of people who type 'LOL' are really doing their Laughing on the Outside. :rolling:
I LIKE TREES. Not sure if you have this if so maybe someone else can use it. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/_Ty-2_Reverse_Cent_Varieties.htm Bruce.
That's not how you spell Why are the 'A' and the 'M' so close together in the normal kind? That's not how you spell Amerimaca. Remember the Portuguese coin a few years back that said 'Republica Portugusa' instead of 'Republica Portuguesa' ('Republica Portuguesa' means Portuguese Republic. 'Republica Portugusa' should be Portyoo-goose Republic - Doesn't mean goose in Portuguese: has no meaning0
Trees - i'll make this as easy as possible from 1959 to 2007 there have been 7 different styles of memorial reverse 1989 to 1992 used style #6 and from 1993 to now uses style #7 the wide AM term is an easy way of distinguishing the difference between style 6 & 7 so in 1998,1999,2000 the mint(for whatever reason) used style#6 & #7 on those years for a limited time on MS coins. the style#6 wide AM's used in those years are scarce to rare - here is web site that can show the difference - also there are others years this web site shows also , not just these - hope this helps -Snowman http://www.varietyvista.com/lincoln_cent_RDV_changes.htm
They arew getting harder to find...I save everything from 1980 back now.... I did 2 boxes of nickels today, got a Indian Head (1930), and a bunch of 40's, and 50's....2 Silver ward nickels....Had fun...Tom
Cheers Thanks Snowman Way more info than I know what to do with, but thanks for going the extra mile once again. [edit] Oh, thanks also to Bruce; I didn't see your post earlier. ~
