I saw this coin on ebay and I think that it is a 'fake'. I think it is too light (by almost 10 gms). I also believe that 'Trade Dollars' were not issued until two years after the date of this coin. (1873 not 1871.) Am I correct? (I am still trying to teach myself.) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1871-TRA...CA-LIBERTY-19-7-gms-NO-reserve-/122688365830?
the date is the giveaway. the rest is toxic icing on the putrid cake. If you want to learn more about trade dollar fakes try this thread I started. enjoy your collecting! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-do-you-spot-fake-trade-dollars-anyway.63695/
I've run across 3 fakes trade dollars in the last few months. One a friend of my wife's showed me. She was insisting that it was real because it looked real. When I had her weigh it and it came back 18.6 grams - she was devastated. 1874-CC no less. The second I got in an auction lot - it was disappointing, but the rest of the bootie in the auction lot was worth it. It was a fake 1878-S. The last I was shown at a coin shop - he took it "out of the wild" and now we have 3 very nice targets for the shooting range.
Guess a shooting range is a good use for them since messing around railroad tracks will get you unwanted attention from the authorities these days.
Thanks for taking the time to read it. Anybody who wants to post photos of fake trade dollars there is welcome to do so. The more data the better.
