So just looking for some suggestions from those who have been doing this a while. What are the best coins to try to find still in circulation? I go to the bank and get bags ($50) of pennies at a time. I just started get quarters too $100 or $200 at a time. Today I was thinking about getting some dimes as something different. I always check to see if they have any half dollars too. I was wondering if people tend to have better luck looking for certain denominations (i.e. quarters instead of pennies). I know for the most part what to look for, but didn't know if a certain denomination had better luck than another. What should I be getting? -JB
Honestly, if your looking for collectibles, go for nickels or pennies. You'll get the best results with those, and rarely a skunk box! Pennies: plenty of wheaties, along with dozens of errors and varieties. always something to find. Nickels: Lots of pre-60 nickels out there (some high-grade), as well as silver war nickels, and occasionally a buffalo nickels (most of them that I find still have their dates. I was finding almost 1 per box when I quit a couple years ago.) Quarters Almost a waste of time. I've gone through $1,000 and never found anything collectible, so I quit. Dimes: You can find a little bit of silver going through dimes but not much. Also very few collectibles to make it worth your while. Halves aren't worth the effort anymore if your going through boxes. So many people searching them that its rare to find a good box unless your going through $5,000/week, which is ridiculous. In summary, if you want to have fun, go through pennies and nickels. If your looking for silver, all I can say is good luck, because it's slim pickings today. What you can find today is nothing like what you could find 5 years ago. You will NOT get rich looking for silver in rolls. You'd make twice as much money in a minimum wage part time job. Just my observations on things.
Also, you will have much better luck looking through custromer wrapped rolls. Much better finds in those than in boxes/bags.
Maybe I would be more discouraged if I had been doing this for years and was used to the bigger results. As it is if I find one or two silver coins a week with the occassional big week I will be content enough to keep going! For me it is the Trifecta. (sp?) I want to stack the silver. I want to fill books with coins. I find searching while watching tv a relaxing way to end my day. I may be able to make more working a second job at mcDonalds, but that not the same as finding treasure! Just read a few of the newer pages from coin roll hunters post your results and you will get a feel for what people are finding. I agree that the ones finding 100's of ounces are going through tons and tons or coin. With Quarters and Dimes being in clear plastic wraps in most cases though only take a few minutes to go through a box though. I think in searching for silver the most ounces come from: halves dimes nickels quarters in that order. I like to search pennies sometimes to mix it up. they are cheap and you are pretty much always going to find copper and wheats. also in CWR's there will be dimes and foreign coins mixed in which and fun and makes you feel better if you are on a skunk streak!!
Haha, thanks, I meandered my way back! Took about a year off roll searching and now have some time on my hands. Plan on getting back into it as soon as I find a new bank to order boxes from. Hope you guys saved me some goodies! ha!
Alright I'm going to head to my bank tomorrow and get some more coins. Hopefully I'll get something good.
I search halfs. And I am one of the crazy half dollar searchers that search over $6000 in halfs a week. It seems with halfs it will all depend on the part of the country you live, I seem to be more blessed than other areas. To date for 2017 I have found 240 ounces of silver, granted I have searched 384 boxes this year so far. But my time in is less than four hours per week, that includes pick up, search, dump. Half searching is all a mass numbers, persistence game. Along with silver I have also found some really nice coins. Like this one last week. But I agree it seems from a collectible stand point Nickel and Penny searchers have the most consistent finds with a lower volume of rolls needed to be searched. Good Luck!
