I just got my first Wyoming State Quarter and I am extremely disappointed. I like the design but the engraving is awful. There is no detail on the cowboy or the bronco. Was this done on purpose? Is it supposed to be a silhouette? The engraving has such low relief that a new coin looks like it is worn. I can only imagine what a worn coin would like in years to come. It is one of my least favorite coins of all-time!
Yes, that is how it is supposed to be and it does indeed suck. These are the early designs and ANY of them would have been better than what they picked. http://www.quarterdesigns.com/proposed/wyoming.html I guess they were looking to be different. This wasn't the best way to go about it.
I was given 6 today and it's my new least favorite design! All that room to do what ever they wanted and this is what they come up with? Look at the others from this year and they were great, Wyoming looks like one of those early 1900's coins that has been worn down to the outline of the design. Not that it was picked to gain my approval but I think the design is boring, uninspirational, and disappointing! Anything would have been better.
Would those be the Tetons? The Wyoming Bucking Bronc is sort of an historical favorite here. It has been on our license plates for years. When talk starts of changing it to something new people get really worked up. Several people I work with propsed designs for the quarter- Devil's Tower, Jenny Lake, and the Tetons were submitted. Still, I can understand why the mint made the choice it did. Sorry you guys don't like it.:goof:
Keep the bronc (I like the idea of it) - just add detail - make it pop on the coin - let people look at it in admiration - give it depth - that's all. Nothing against the state or the designer just wish it wasn't so one dimensional.
The mint didn't make the choice. A state committe decided which five designs the citizens would be alowed to chose from and they made fourof them variations on the same theme. So the bronco rider was pretty much a forgone conclusion before the voting process even began.
Ive been to Wyoming once and the coolest thing there was the jackalope The jackalope wyoming quarter would have been great...
I had the same reaction when I opened my proof set. I thought at first I had a neat error, but when I opened my second set, I couldn't help ask why I had actually paid for such a plain coin. I too searched through the proposals and sat dumbfounded as to why this one was chosen. I understand the history of the cowboy and certainly endorse its appearance, but is that all there is to the state? The state quarters are a representation of each state to the rest of the country. Unfortunately, this left me with a dull impression of Wyoming. Don't worry, I know its a great state
Too plain - I could think of a theme similar to the Washington quarter - how about a grizzly with the Yellowstone Old Faithful and a horseback rider in the background
I just received my first Wyoming quarter and not seeing the design until it was in my hand I thought I hit the "jackpot" thinking it was an error that somehow the detail didn't get stamped on the rider and bronc. I did check, it turned out to be their design pick. So not only don't have an error I just have one fugly Wyoming quarter. John
Wyoming State Quarter Design Who selected the Wyoming design with no detail? Was it the governor? Since the design is already smooth and flat, imagine what the coin will look like in years to come after getting worn down; there'll be no design at all !
So sad I lived in Wyoming in Lander in the 80's and worked as a backcountry ranger in the Wind River Mtns. It is such beautiful state. This is sad they really screwed up the coin. It is the cowboy state but sheesh, they should have put some detain on there. Who wants a flat quarter? And no intrinsic value? Many somebody really messed up. Maybe a Wyoming commemorative with a portrait of the president without any detain. That would be funny. And a huge collectors item. Ha. UncleKin
