Hey all, Commodus as Hercules. AD180-192. AE sestertius Denomination: AE sestertius. Mint: Rome AD 192 Size: 28.8 x 30.5 mm. Weight: 24.29 grams. Reference: Sear-5751. RIC 637 Grade: Good Fine to about VF. Pit in front of chin. Some porosity, but over all pleasing. Obverse: Head of Commodus right wearing the lion's skin headdress, with L AEL AVREL COMM AVG P FEL around. Reverse: Club with HER-DVL ROM-ANO AVF-GV around and S C flanking the club at the bottom. The reverse basically means "HERCULES IS THE ROMAN EMPEROR" which tells of that by this time Commodus insanity had progressed to the point he not only felt he was descended from Hercules, but actually was Hercules. Greetings Ro
My cool example is an AS, not a Sestertius ... but here it is anyway Commodus AE As Rome mint 177-192 AD Diameter: 25 mm Weight: 11.55 grams Obverse: Commodus bust right wearing lion’s skin: L.AEL.AVREL.COMM.AVG.P.FEL Reverse: Very interesting reverse with the following legend HERCVL / ROMAN / AVGV ... in three lines, divided by club, all within wreath Oh sorry => fantastic new example, ro (congrats!!)
Man, Ro, I like your Sesterius, and the pic is well done! Thank you. I have a Commodus en route, but not in the bag yet!
Wat een mooi muntje, hé?! This is one type (Commodus cosplaying Hercules) that is on my wish list for a long while!
